There are different methods of calculating octane:

    RON (Highest)

    MON (Lowest)

Formula used in USA: RON +MON/2

Some other countries use RON, so 98 octane in Australia isn't the same as 98 octane in the USA.

As far as gasolione prices go in the USA, things are not really that bad:

    Historical Gas Prices
    (Adjusted for inflation)

    Source: U.S. Department of Energy

    1950 - $1.91

    1955 - $1.85

    1960 - $1.79

    1965 - $1.68

    1970 - $1.59

    1975 - $1.80

    1980 - $2.59

    1985 - $1.90

    1990 - $1.51

    1995 - $1.28

    2001 - $1.66

    2002 - $1.31

    2003 - $1.52

    2004 - $1.79

    2005 - $2.28

    2006 (so far) - $2.68

In the US unless you are buying racing fuel, which is currently running around 9 dollars a gallon in Philly, you can't even get 98 octane.
Regular gas, 89 octane is now 3.02 a gallon.

Yeah, I just noticed that I was complaining about 1.70 for premium too.

I let my car go too long without a bath one time this past winter. But after a good wash & QD, it handled really well on the road at highway speeds.

The reduced drag really made a difference.

    You're lucky, all of you.

Here in Singapore, 98 octance gas averages about US$4.50 per gallon. We are paying through our noses besides other orifices......

actually it does. the main reason for fuel consumption (and hence why optimum speed is ~60 mph) is due to aerodynamic drag.

a component of drag is skin friction drag, or the drag caused by the air actually dragging along the surface of the vehicle (as opposed to pressure drag)

so yes, a clayed and waxed car will have less skin friction drag. of course this may account for < 1lb of drag, thereby saving less money in gas than is spent on surface refinement products

Here in NC, our gas tax is about 10 cents a gallon higher than in SC.

Fortunately, I live 8 miles from the state line.

    Changing gears a bit here.

Here is a link from the US Dept. of Energy that has some tips for saving gas.

They left out the part about how a well detailed car will save on gas though.
