  • Radar detector!!

So after my ticket in April. And after I got some birthday money. I decided to get a radar detector. So ppl love em and some ppl hate em. I looked at the Passport 8500 X50 and the Beltronics RX65. The RX65 won my decision battle. I plan on hardwiring it and ordering an aux speaker. Can wait to put it in my car. Anyone have one? Please leave your feedback.....This is my FIRST one! My price ranger was between $275 and $350, (so no GPS units were looked at)...Thanks!

        Re: Radar detector!!

I have no need for one, especially after riding in a vehicle that was clocked doing 85 in a 65 with nary a sound from the Valentine unit. We were caught by a bear in the air.

If your city has red light/traffic cameras guess what revenue enhancement they'll foist upon you next in the name of "traffic safety?"

Here in Mordor, er Illinois we have iPass on the tollways. Ipass is an electric transponder that identifies your vehicle so the tollway can deduct your toll from your account. When you go through a toll plaza they know to the second what time you did and they will know to the second the time you go through the next plaza. Simple mathematics will tell them the average speed necessary to travel this distance. Mordor is darn near bankrupt, so any day now one of our wonderful politicians will realize there is a pot of gold waiting to be tapped and the fanciest radar unit will be obsolete.

Of course this is just MHO & YMMV.

Where did $199 come from? $400-$350=$50. Either way, I misread it earlier. I thought you were asking for opinions before you bought one, not after. Nevermind it.

Not to be a Debby Downer but I think they're a waste of money, spend your money on a girl or more detailing supplies!

If you got the need for speed, do it out on the track, or do it on a stretch of road where your the only one on it so that you only take your self out. I've seen enough misery due to speeding to keep me up some nights, I guess they don't show graphic videos of accident scenes anymore in driver's ed classes.

Sorry, but this strikes a bad nerve for me.

I completley uderstand and respect ur opinion. I dont plan on going out on the road and doing 105+ mph. Ive been there and done that. Remember when I was clocked @ 94mph in a 70 mph zone. I dont wanna be in that place again. I more or so purchased it to be more aware of my surroundings. So if I do decided to do 70mph in a 60 mph zone, i decrease my risks of get ticketed. I dont plan on zooming like I used to Speed kills, and so does being idiotic. When i was pulled over, I was running on a 2 lane interstate @ about 100-105 mph with VERY little traffic, was it stupid YESS, probably the stupidest thing ive ever done with my vehical. I dont plan on it again...it was also stupid to do it by myself. The only car on the road running around 100mph on a sunnny day, DUH THE COP IS GOONA GET ME...and he did. So i got a detector to be more aware of officers and if i ever do speed by a few mph, i kinda makes the game a little more fair...

Fair? You speed, you get pulled over and get a ticket. You don't speed, you don't get a ticket. What could be more fair than that? The cops aren't out to get you, you know. Heck, for $250 you've already paid for a traffic ticket or two.

It's just another distraction in my book. You should be focused on your speed and the speed limit. You don't need a radar detector to do this. In fact it can make you complacent and have the opposite effect.

You've indicated that you used to "zoom" through traffic, but you've since grown up a little and you don't do this anymore. That's good. As you get older, you'll learn to drive the speed limit and you'll actually learn to enjoy it. Rather than being annoyed by people that are doing the speed limit and holding you up from doing 10mph over, that most people feel entitled to, you'll end up being annoyed, by the drivers who haven't yet learned patience.

Believe me... I've smashed cars, ran from police, ended up in the hospital from broken bones in the process, so I've learned the hard way. Fortunately I never hurt anyone but myself.

At this point in my life, you couldn't pay me to drive around with a radar detector. I'd end up throwing in out the window (into a garbage can of course) the first time it beeped or flashed. If you're a responsible law abiding driver, who pays attention to their driving, there is absolutely no need for this device. I know you own it already and you are going to use it, so that's not the point of my post. The point is your mindset will change over time. Come back and read this post in a few years and you'll be able to relate. Hopefully a little bit of what we are saying today, will sink in and help accelerate the process.

Please don't speed it will cost you one way or another!! If you must get a detector get the VALENTINE ONE it is with-out a doubt the best there is for quite a while now but please try to slow down , all the rest of the devices are not worth a penny in my book!!

You all have great points. And like I said I dont plan on using it to go 100 mph everyday. This is my first one. I may hate it or I may love it. We will see...And the reason I didnt get the V1 is because this $250 detector is "supposedly" "comparable" to the V1. The V1 seems out dated to me. Looks old, no gps, I just dont like the design of it for $400+....I believe I will be happy with my Bel RX65

You shouldn't be doing 100mph any day.

You'll only hate it if it doesn't keep you from getting a ticket, and you'll only love it if it saves you from one. Driving the speed limit works better.

I absolutely love pulling people over when they have a radar detector. It is so funny because I know the whole reason they bought one, and I just defeated it. I have never given a warning to someone with a radar detector, even if I didn't stop them for speed. You may not know you have a signal light out or something else minor. If you get stopped for that and the law enforcement officer sees a radar (whether its on or off), chances are pretty darn good you'll be getting a ticket for that and whatever else they can find.

I feel pretty confident if I'm stopping people for speeding with active radar detectors, they are getting stopped by other officers. I don't believe they save any money in the long run.

Think about this. The standard perception/reaction time is 1.6 seconds. This is the time it takes to perceive a threat, process it, remove your foot from the accelerator, and apply the brakes.

                            70 mph = 102.62 feet per second (fps). 102.62 * 1.6 = 164 fps traveled during the perception/reaction time.

                            60 mph = 87.96 fps. 87.96 * 1.6 = 140 fps traveled.

That's a difference of 24 feet. In avoiding a crash, 24 feet is a massive distance. That could be the difference between completely avoiding a crash or being 24 feet up the backend of a car with a backseat full of babies. Or a car carrying your mom, dad, grandparents, best friends, ...

Going the speed limit vs just 10 over makes a HUGE difference. Speeding is never a good thing.

I don't see a problem with going 2-3 mph over the speed limit. Seems fair to me.
