It really doesn't matter where you go.....
This morning during my wake up smoke I saw some chuckle head in a VW fly down my street doing at least 75.....speed limit's 25 on a small urban residential side street. Ohh yeah, the two stop signs on either side of my house were non existent to them. Happens every morning, it's only a matter of time before a jogger, dog walker, or the paper girl gets taken out.
We're not trying to bust your knuckles up, we're just trying to steer you in the right direction. Don't really care to see someone set up for failure. Radar detectors are to a speeder what crack is to a junkie....too much temptation.
A lot of LE agencies don't even use radar so depending on where your at, all you have is a really expensive paperweight, don't even drive thru Virginia with one either!
Also that great technology known as the cell phone, everyone has at least one these days and it I never fail to hear at least 15 speed/reckless complaints over the 911 radio before I eat lunch.....complete with license plate #'s and descriptions!
Why do police officers get such a bad rep on this subject? I guess the complainers have never made that house visit to notify whoever answers the door that their son or daughter, or that their spouse and children have just been killed by a speeder or a drunk......
For those who fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.

Yall all have great points and I kinda think yall are right. . Speeding is VERY dangerous. And guess what I found out yesterday. In the state of GA, a LOCAL cop, not state patrol, cannot pull you over if you are going <10 mph over the PSL IF he obtaied your speed using an electronic device (laser, radar, etc).....but yes thanks for both sides of the story. If we be smart and stay alert, we can be safe...And I never knew Colin was an LEO...?
It's all good SX4DUDE, just don't wanna see anything bad happen. I've been in your shoes, I used to speed when I first got my license. My first and only speeding ticket slowed me down since it hurt the wallet big time. Joining the EMS profession slowed me down even more once I saw what high speed collisions can do to the human body.
For those who fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.
I've never owned one and never saw the value of having one, but I haven't been ticketed for speeding in over 25 years. If you drive at a speed that is safe for the flow of traffic and road conditions, you likely will not draw the attention of police anyway.
For the most part, police are more concerned with removing unsafe drivers from the road and that includes DUI's and reckless drivers. A lane jumper driving at the speed limit will get a cop's notice faster than someone going 5 or 10 over the posted speed limit.
And one thing I took away with me from my last traffic school class was a CHP officer advising us that possessing a radar detector practically squashes any chance of leniency or ticket forgiveness from either the cop who pulls you over, or from a traffic court judge should you decide to appeal your ticket.

And he couldn't have been more right, regardless of the state you live in!

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
Had my X50 for a good 5 years, so far no tickets. I'm a slow driver though. I find it helpful in traveling long distances and specially in LA/OC where everybody seems to be speeding. Have to say that I also like the my Garmin GPS since it shows me the speed limit of each street or fwy.
I don't see a problem with going 2-3 mph over the speed limit. Seems fair to me.
Why?
The issue I see with this is... you feel there is nothing wrong with doing 2-3 over. The next person feels there is nothing wrong with doing 5-10 over. The next person feels there is nothing wrong with doing 2-3 over the average speed. Then you get some people who are stupid enough to think that as long as you are passing someone, you're not speeding.
There are another set of people that you get. Those that feel their experience, their vehicle (ie. sport car/bike), or the great road conditions entitle them to speed. "Those limits are just there for worst case scenarios... that's not the case with me".
The speed limit is the limit. It's not the recommended speed, it's the legal limit.
So I ask you with all seriousness, why does it seem "fair" that you should be allowed to travel 2-3 MPH over the limit?
Before you answer, I just want to note that there is a big difference between margin of error and knowingly traveling x%/amount faster than than the posted limit.
To me it's this sense of "entitlement" that is the root of a huge issue.

Sure he can.
Perhaps he isnt supposed to though.
Whatever.

Personally hate them! They chirp, beep false warnings all the time. Most police that I know use instant on radar. Instant on is just like a gun and they "shoot" you with radar so its not on all the time. So when you come over the bend or around the curve they "shoot" you with the radar and they got ya! At that time the radar detector will go crazy but it will be too late. I am 34 now so my lead foot is gone and I have stopped trying to beat the law. I put a front liscense plate on my car because I am tired of getting pulled over for no front plate even though I hate the way they look. I will not have front tinted windows because it is illegal in Illinois and I got tired of getting pulled over and trying to fight the law.
For me it is so much easier to follow the speed limit than deal with a radar detector. Plus you have to keep it out of sight from potential thieves.....just one more thing I have to worry about!
Good luck with yours though. I am sure the modern detectors are much better than the ones I have tested from years ago, let me know how well it works for you!

I will have to disagree with u on one this. Instant on radar is instant. But from what i've been told, that with a good detector, u can often pick up" leftovers" from other shots towards different cars. And it did well today on the 2hr drive home. It was set and didn't go off until we near a four way stop. It started beeping a k band alert. Then we look over the the officer was looking for stop sign runners i think it will do well. And im not too worried about theft. It will be hardwired behing my tint strip and i also have a$ 1200 security system on my car so hopefull that will help

I can't believe it and have no idea why its true, but here it is straight from the Georgia Traffic Code:
40-14-8. (a) No county, city, or campus officer shall be allowed to make a case based on the use of any speed detection device, unless the speed of the vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by more than ten miles per hour and no conviction shall be had thereon unless such speed is more than ten miles per hour above the posted speed limit.
Unbelievable!

Very strange... perhaps the administration/court costs exceeds the revenue.
Or... the courts would be full.
Just looking for a reason to consider this logical.
