Re: Radar detector!!
hmmm Colin do you have any idea what FHP does when we call them for some kid zig zagging thru traffic at high speeds?? I'm not sure if the *FHP
program was in effect when you were down here.

It happens all the time. Usually several times during a 10 hour shift. We don't catch them all, but they get aired.
Yes, the reporting party gets subpoenaed to court if the violator contests the ticket. The whole case is based upon the reporting party's testimony since we, the officer, didn't observe the violation.

Oddly enough, here in Colorado a citizen can call in a traffic complaint. After stopping the vehicle, the reporting party fills out a form explaining what the other driver did. If we feel there is sufficient evidence that the driver broke the law, we can issue a ticket off the reporting party's statement. Crazy, I know, since we never observed the violation. I think its stupid, but that's the way it works here.

Re: Radar detector!!
agreed we're having a nice civil conversation about law enforcement and speeding and radar detectors. Seems to be flowing along quite nicely.

Who's getting off topic and how so? I think we're pretty much on the same concept here.

Re: Radar detector!!
Just curious here, is partially opening the door of the squad car on the shoulder and leaning out with the LIDAR SOP? I see this all the time. This seems rather risky.

Re: Radar detector!!
Yeah I'm sure our local guy's don't appreciate all the citizen calls since most seem to be pretty trivial. Although when they get multiple calls or road rage calls, they're on it pretty quickly!
On the cell phone note, nothing erks me worse then people calling in an accident and don't bother to stop or render some type of assistance! Gotta love hearing "caller reports seeing an accident at the intersection such and such or on rt such near such interchange.....caller is unaware of any injuries, caller did not stop.
So out the door we go an lo and behold......there's no accident.....nothing....nada, no cars, no debris, no traffic, nothing......ERRRRRRR!

In the metro areas, you work with what you've got. Unfortunately, running LIDAR or RADAR on the shoulder is usually all you've got. Dangerous? Yes, but so is nearly every aspect of our job. That's why we get paid so much!

Trust me if there is someone smoking along 90+ causing a danger to a crowded roadway i will call *FHP without hesitiation and give them the tag # has anything ever resulted from my calls who knows.

Here in Pa the State Troopers used to hide behind trees in the median of the wider highways. I guess they received too many complaints because they can't hide and the trees have been removed.
Another thing is........your radar detector won't save you from the......CELL PHONE! Every single day I hear at least several dozen speeding and reckless driving complaints over the radio from people calling them in from the roads and highways. So if ya ever get nailed even though you didn't pass a cruiser, this probably happened to you.

First off, RADAR cannot be "focused" onto one car out of a group of cars. RADAR covers everything. Think of it as a cone. As it leaves the antenna, it gets wider and wider the further out it travels. LIDAR is what is pinpoint. Its like shooting fish in a barrel.
The Trooper wasn't singling you out, or profiling you. He merely activated his RADAR to clock a vehicle he was interested in. You just happened to be in the area.
It is not uncommon, especially on busy roads like I-4, for an LEO to clock cars that are close to the car. I've clocked people at distances less than 100 feet. As for the Trooper being in the open, great! We aren't suppose to hide. In fact, FHP's policy prohibits hiding while conducting speed enforcement.
Hope this helps.

The newest thing I've seen them do which i think is really dangerous with todays drivers is park on the left emergency shoulder get out of there car and turnaround and shoot that way. Seems really dangerous and foolish to me. On the plus side they have passed new laws with regards to speed while passing a trooper on the side of the road. You must yield to the next lane if possible or slow way down if you cant. Hopefully this will save some lives.
I like Troop D a lot as they have been my helper and nemesis most of my life.

no citation though in all fairness FHP seems to be more interested in 80+ for a ticket these days

I know if Iplay fast I will possibly have to pay the price. Just today FHP took aim at me on I-4 in my car in my avatar. What he didnt realize was that A) I saw him way out of range B) I dont understand why he would have shot my car with KA band at 300ft or less. He was in plain view and I was at the tail of a pack of cars traveling 70 in a 65. I would call that profiling. Could you give me your opinion from a LEO's point of view why he might have done that??. I do run a radar detector and dont expect a break from any LEO . I use my rd as a tool just as you guys use your rd guns and have no hard feelings towards any officers that catch me.
Again as many have said Thank You for being out there for us if we need you.
