Fatherinlaw has 2....1987 4x4 pickup with 398,000 miles, we took it last week to get 1/2 yard of gravel for the barn.
His 1996 4 runner has over 400,000 miles on it and he still pulls a small bass boat with it

All of these vehicles have never been in the shop for major maintenance except tune up, brakes, exhaust.....etc.

Most of these miles are highway but common look at the miles! My corolla engine never misses a beat and runs like new...

I am a chevy man at heart but my experence with toyotas doesn't lie
That has been my fathers experience with Toyota as well. He has gotten over 200,000 miles easy with any Toyota (heck, even Honda too) he has purchased.

      Re: How bout them Toyotas!

For years we have heard how much better quality the Japanese cars are over the U.S. cars. My wife had a 1988 Acura Integra and it was a good car, but I wouldn't say it was that much better than if any than U.S. made cars. I think the big difference was the Japanese cars were being with new equipment so tolerances were tighter than were being held by U.S. manufacturers who were using old worn out equipment so the foreign cars were better, not so much by design as by equipment being used.

So I am glad that the media is finally getting off theh backs of the U.S. manufacturers and the foreign manufacturers are feeling the heat.

      Just my 2 cents worth

On the other side of the table my dad has had 2 3500 Dodge dump trucks for his masonry business and has gotten 170000 out of both of them without any major problem. So I am not anti American at all its just that Toyota and Honda makes some damn reliable cars as with American car makers as well. Of coarse all manufactures have had a few lemons as well as some poor designs. But if manufactures didn't change their designes then cars would not change at all making their technology old and inefficent. Do you know that most new cars no longer have a steering column? It is all electroninic steering thus eliminating weight and improving fuel efficency..........

Point I am making is that all designes are destin to have a few flaws

With all due respect (and I have a lot of respect for you guys in this forum) Toyota isn't new to problems.

I may have missed this post, but if you'll recall several years ago, there was a big issue with some cars "sludging". Toyota tried to blame it on the consumer which didn't fly. That being said, they still have considerably less problems than other car manufacturers and still make a great product.

Keep in mind, I own a '95 Camry and I haven't had much problem with it at all. In fact, I love my Toyota. But they need to watch themselves and their QA.

For those of you without specific knowledge of the problem and the fix, here is a picture with all the information.

Fortunately for me this issue didn't extend to the Camry Hybrids.

Toyotas are very good cars . They almost will last forever , but when they break they cost a fortune to fix. Example, you sunroof doesent work anymore it may cost you a $1000.00 to fix. Front struts cost $1000.00 to replace at the dealer. That is just two examples.

                  Re: How bout them Toyotas!

...and just in case it wasn't clear, a "precision cut steel reinforcement bar" = a shim.

Toyota's PR department helped out with that one

Toyota is implementing the shim fix for the vehicles already on the road - but it isn't a permanent fix. At some point they will likely replace the entire pedal assembly, but they don't have the capacity to build enough parts for the new sales and existing customers. The shim is allowing for a "quick fix," and the full fix will likely take years to complete.

There is the same issue going on with the other Toyota recall with pedals and floor mats - Toyota is using sawsall to cut pedals to shorten them, among other things, and then later when they have the capacity for the parts they will allow customers to get a new pedal.

Going to be a long, long time before this is all said and done with.

Expect the Prius recall to become official sometime this upcoming week, as it went live in Japan over the weekend.

That they do in my families experience with no problems at all. If anything both Toyota and Honda should be worried about Hyundai. Hyundai has gone leaps and bounds (did anyone think that they weren't going to improve over time and learn from their mistakes like other auto manufacturers) and not only do they have one of the best warranties, their quality is among the tops (IIRC, within the top 3 or 4 but the others were luxury brands). Both the Genesis Coupe and Sedan have gotten high praise from both customers and reviewers as well. With the new 2011 Sonata (and Tucson) coming out, the competion better be worried.

My first Car was a Corolla, I beat the snot out of that car, wrecked a few times with it and took out a deer and it still ran like a champ. now that I'm a much more wiser and observant driver....I wish I still had that car!

Any kind of major recall will hurt any manufacturer weather it be Toyota, Ford, BMY....ect. The same kind of windstorm of negitivity would have hit Mercedes if they had a recall of that size.

                          Re: How bout them Toyotas!

I have owned only Toyotas since 1995.

                          '89 Tercel
                          '85 Supra
                          '05 Echo hatch
                          '98 RAV4

They were/are all great vehicles with very few problems. However, the worst one quality wise is the Echo, which I still have. The interior is made of very cheap plastic, some rattles occur randomly, interior plastic panel adjustment is Lada worthy. Granted this is an econobox, but the interior of my old Tercel looked richer, and not a rattle ever happened. Exterior panels fit isn't the best either on the Echo.

If it wasn't fun to drive and didn't give me real good MPGs, I wouldn't have considered buying it (I got it new). Price was high for a subcompact, a bit too high for the product's quality, but I didn't know that at the time.

If I was in the marked today for a new car, I wouldn't be going to Toyota. I decided that a few years ago. They make good cars, that's true, but not so good that they can keep asking premium price for it. What definitely nailed the coffin for me is the look of the modern Toyota cars. I don't like them.

Here is the "Canadian Nickel" version of the planned fix. Not recommended to try, but it will give you a look at how the fix will be accomplished.

Best time to buy a Toyota is now. Stocks are down and chances are dealers will cut you some deal$! I would if I was in the market for a new car. Yota's will last forever. Here's proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3uvx93QV1U
