Re: Paul Dalton in HD!! Very well done!

    Nice video Paul!

On the topic of using a spray-on wax with detailing clay; a few times during our Saturday classes at Meguiar's someone would accidentally grab Meguiar's maroon bottle of Quik Wax and use it as a clay lube thinking it was Meguiar's Quik Detailer since both bottles are the same shape, size and color.

When used with the white clay bar that comes in Meguiar's Smooth Surface Clay Kit the Quik Wax would dissolve and make the white clay bar gooey.

In a class with 20 to 30 people in it this would usually look bad until someone would point out that the lube wasn't a lube but was in fact a spray-on wax and then wipe the gooey residue off the car.

I don't know if this happens with all spray-on waxes and all detailing clay but it did happen with Meguiar's Quik Wax and Meguiar's Quik Clay. This led me to remove all the bottles of Quik Wax on the wire racks in the Training Garage and place them in the product cupboards first thing in the morning before the classes started just to prevent someone from accidentally mixing Quik Wax with Quik Detailer.

Usually, it's best to use a dedicated clay lubricant with detailing clay unless the manufacture recommends otherwise.

    FWIW

Mike Stoops, you could test this and verify, I don't have any Quik Wax with me or I would.

Just might have to try that sometime soon and see what it does.

Very interesting. You know, we do get an awful lot of people telling us how much they love our wax, and when we ask for clarification on which wax they use they tell us Quik Detailer or Ultimate Quik Detailer. There is still a large population who thinks these products are wax substitutes, and it is possible that the 3M Quick Wax is vastly different from Meguiar's Quik Wax - and more along the lines of Quik Detailer.

I have the 3M Quick Wax, but I haven't really used it. Didn't care much for Meg's regular Quik Wax, but UQW is the bomb!

I couldn't find my five kilo tin of Swissvax, so I thought I'd give it a try. I was fresh was out of my Meg's low aggressive clay too. I borrowed some Mothers yellow clay and used it with UQW. Clay held up fine and I did the entire car, a '99 C280. The paint didn't have much contanimants in it. I'm using it as a daily driver so the acid test will be running it through the car wash in a few days, normally not done, but this car has not seen a buffing pad yet.

Even if this works, I can see only using the clay/Quick Wax/UQW in a situation where the car cannot be finished up and will be exposed outside without any LSP otherwise.

This process led to another experiment. I clayed the wheels on this same unit that had some don't-want-to come-off brake dust spotting on the fronts (factory rims). Used a body shop only aggressive clay from ADS with Meg's Super Degreaser at about 5:1. The clay was starting to lose its flavor in the end, but lasted for two wheels and seemed to do a pretty good job.

I have detailed with numerous spray waxes including Zaino z6 and z8, blackfire deep gloss, meguiars m135, werkstat carnuaba trigger, duragloss, optimum cw, and many others. In most cases with most clays it works fine. Not better, not worse, just fine. I would assume the solvents in some products could damage the clay.

My biggest worry would be the wax leaving behind a coating that could negatively effect the way some polishes work or lead to filling problems. I like to have a clean surface to work on. Well as clean as possible.

Great video Paul. High class all the way :-). There are many detailers, myself included, that have been inspired by the image that you and Dom originally created.

Here were my thoughts after doing a test "spot" (panel):

                      1. I would not do this to clay before polishing. By the time surface was clayed I was left with waxed surface. I felt one might perceive benefit of it as "re-wax-as-u-clay" technique for those times you are not doing polishing but personally I wouldn't see a point behind that on a car that has been given coat of very expensive wax not too long beore that.

                      2. Clay was very quickly loading up with wax. As a result "grabiness" of clay's surface disappeared very quickly. Once that happened part of clay touching the paint was "dense"/"solid". Moment that happened contaminants were not ending up in clay, they were trapped between such hardened clay's surface and paint and dragged across paint resulting in swirls.

Could you specify what exact products you used?

Re: Paul Dalton in HD!! Very well done!

okay here is the pictures that i promised...and a quick video ! i ran out of memory on the video but i think i got the point through..when i clayed with the quick wax, the clay kept dragging and it sounded like sandpaper, and the clay gets stuck at times, i know it looks like im claying fast but i was just trying to move quickly, you can see the clay get stuck in a few places because of the quick wax, this never happens with quick detailer..also after using the quick wax, the clay got very soft and a bit gooey and residue would stick to the paint.

here is the video, i wasnt sure how to embed it on here..so here is the link..

                          here are the pics..

here is the surface of my 1984 mercedes benz 380SL, yes i know the surface is swirled up, i havent gotten a chance to buff it all out because of the cold.

                          here is the quick detailer...

                          everything looking good..

                          here is the quick wax..

and look at what the quick wax has left behind, what appears to be some hazing, i could not remove this without bring out a paint cleaner, i used scratch X and was able to remove the hazing, however i was not able to remove it with regular quick detailer, or clay.

speed3blackmica - My guess is that the lack of proper lubrication allowed the clay to cause mild marring. It likely wouldn't happen on all paints, but slightly softer paints can mar from even mild clay in some situations.

I guess this is a good example of why you should be careful when using methods outside of the recommendations... Paul is obviously a very seasoned pro and knows what to look for.

i know Mark. the car i worked on was a repaint and is now a BB/CC and the clear is rather soft, you can take the defects out by hand rather easily. just wanted to see what using Quick Wax from meguiars would do to the clay and the surface, and wanted to show others
