It is not as sad as it is depressing. As in most typical postmodern storytellings, the protagonists in Tokyo Sonata eventually redeem themselves in the worst of situations.
Kind of off topic here. In the aforementioned movie, one character is enlisted into the US Army as a Japanese Citizen to fight in Iraq. Does such conscription exist?
It is most depressing and lets not repeat history ever again.
I saw bits & pieces of it, and I agree, it is one of the saddest movies I've ever come across.
