Re: Looking for a good camera

The 18-105 is the better lens. Although, the D90 can correct chromatic aberration - usually higher in longer zooms.

The question is how often do you need the extra 105 to 200. If I was doing a lot of distance photography (maybe like at a race, etc) then you may need the extra reach.

In a similar tone as J20DB, most DSLR's have a lot of capability. The real secret to success is to understand why the camera decides things (what to focus on, what sections it determines exposure, when it can change the iso automatically, aperature/shutter speed/iso settings, etc).

Thanks guys! I think ill stick with the 18-105 then. After hearing this from yall I looked at removes for the 18-200 and the 18-105 just does seem better. Plus that 18-200 carries a hefty price tag

What is the difference from the 18-200 and the 55-200? I was debating getting the 70-300 for airshows, got a Blue Angels air show in october. However, idk how often I would need that big a zoom. What other lenses do you guys think I should look into? reasonable price would be best but im willing to pay for quality

You can always rent the lens. I did not try my 70-300 at air shows but I used it for nature. Here are some samples of how well it can perform even at 300mm:

Just played around with my lil sisters point and shoot cannon power shot. Neat little camera. I tweaked with the settings and god some really good photos out of it. Nothing worth showing but good quality. Makes me excited to get my DSLR

Like mentioned, lensrentals.com is one of reputable places if you don't have a shop that does it in your vicinity. Lens renting is a common practice among professionals, makes no sense to tie up fund in multi-thousand dollar lens that might get used once in a blue moon.

Very true, im going to see if I can find a local place first cuz that would be more convient. Which 70-300 is that you are using? I looked online and one was barely over 100 and the other is going for around 500? Is there two different versions?

I use D300, D40, and few others, depending on what my goal is. All of the samples I have posted were with D300.

The 18-55mm range is where you will shoot most of your indoor family type photos.

Doesn't seem like much difference but you'll need the lower end to capture everything (or everybody) at close distances.
