Re: Looking for a good camera

I just bought a Nikon D60 kit from Costco because it came with a 55-200 mm lens and a memory card . Unlike other places they would have cost more with those 2 items. I chose the D60 because it is the lightest of all SLR cameras and for my needs this camera was just right for me since I take a lot of landscape pictures and now I can use it for taking pictures of my car and truck . You should choose the camera that suits your needs such as what you will be using the camera for . What I mean by that is you dont want to spend extra money on a SLR camera on options that you dont need ( high shutter speeds ) . Another thing is that on SLR cameras , the lenses ( F2 , F3.5 etc ) are another thing to keep in mind as good lenses cost more then the camera itself . Anyhow the bottom line is to stay within your set budget and choose the camera that is best for you . Happy Hunting !

Re: Looking for a good camera

I think the Nikon 18-105mm is a good lens. It is optically better than the 18-200 and weights bit less. With 12MP you can crop to get the narrow angle The second lens would be the 70-300 VR lens. I have the 18-105 and it works for me.

The 18-200 lens has beencalled the vacation lens meaning it something you use to be sure you never have to change lenses to get a shot.

Despite what one expert says, if you have used a D40 and a D90 the D90 is much better -- not for the optical quality but the in camera motor, gorgeous LCD, extra in camera options, focusing systems, imager from the D200, etc. If you use the my menu feature you can have quick access to most used options if not available through the hw controls (like iso, metering, bracketing, exposure compensate, etc)

^great information thanks! So would you suggest that the kit lens the 18-105 is fine or would you recommend going for the 18-200 since it is such a versitiale lens?

I realize you are set on the D90. But in yesterdays paper, Best buy had the 40 with a extra lens and the carrying case for $550.00 Just passing it along.

Re: Looking for a good camera

I would recommend just using both cameras in a store. Play with the controls, look thru the view finder, look at the LCD especially the zoom preview, take some test shots, etc. If you cannot really see much difference (it may not mean much to you so nothing wrong with that) and on a budget, get the D40 deals but I think the D5000 is somewhere in between. The D5000 is like $900 with a kit lens but has the imaging system from the D90 but still no in camera motor.

To me image quality matters more than versatility.

So which would you prefer? The kit lens or the 18-200?

18-105. IMHO image "quality" from 18-200 is too low for my taste.

Re: Looking for a good camera

Keep in mind that for image quality, your lens is more important than the camera body. As far as image quality goes, the biggest difference you'll see between consumer level and pro level cameras is going to be high-ISO performance. Image-quality aside, the more expensive cameras tend to be much nicer to use - better control layouts, bigger/brighter viewfinders, faster framerates, bigger/faster buffers, better ergonomics, etc.

Consumer level DSLR's have pretty short life cycles, but a good lens isn't going to be obsolete for a long, long time. Heck, even pro level DSLR's have relatively short life cycles compared to film-based cameras. (Of course, just because a camera isn't the newest in the lineup doesn't mean that it's bad).

Keep in mind, though, that the user is generally the biggest limitation. Until you understand how photography works and learn how to use the camera, your ability will hold back your photos more than your equipment will; a better camera is NOT a magic bullet that will instantly improve your photography. Get the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson; it'll really help.
