Since the new CAFE regulations are for the whole company, not per car, many see Porsche buying Volkswagen was a move to shelter the performance cars from the new regulations.

I see what you mean. By buying out a fuel efficient auto company like you state about Porsche and VW that the performance company can stay alive and also use technology from VW. That I can see happening. I think Shelby could make the Mustang separately from Ford.

If they bring the 5.0L V-8 into the 2009 Mustang, I know my new graduation present!! I mean 5.0L in a car....amazing. Our F-150 has a 5.4L and is pretty darn fast (has some mods) and is about 1,500lbs more than the Mustang. The new Camaro looks amazing and is going to be F-A-S-T!!! Ford is going to have to do the 5.0L to even have a comparable car to Chevy. The legendary Camaro name and 1969 looks with the amazing 6.0L LS2 with 400HP is going to blow Ford out of the water if they don't act fast.

I don't know about you guys, but I reckon that 2009 is going to be one of the best new car years in a long time. Think about it, new Camaro, new Challenger (hopefully), maybe a 5.0L Mustang, new F-150, new Ram (going to be horrible, no offense), Cadillac CTS-V (going to be a beast), Corvette ZR1 (600HP) and many others.

We'll have to wait and see!!

They already had a 5.0 3V mustang by Saleen. It is the Parnelli Jones / Saleen addition and goes for 60k.... to the rear wheels they put down 315rwhp and 313rwtq SAE Corrected. It is a limited addition and has far better handling components then the over rated Shelby GT500.

I, for one, hate CAFE standards. "Better living through regulation"... NOT! A free market society means that each of us has the right to choose based on our needs, preferences, etc., and the market dictates success and failure of the products offered.

The government generally only jacks things up worse (like allowing the oil companies and airlines to consolidate, eliminating competition), instead of letting the market dictate what MPG should be by enabling consumers to vote with our wallets.

Why can't I have (assuming I can afford it), a 500 HP V8 Mustang for weekends AND a 50 MPG direct injection turbo diesel commuter car for work? Darn-it! Let me choose, otherwise, we'll all be driving Soviet-era Trabant-lie drones.

Sorry for the rant, but as a life-long car guy, garbage like CAFE makes my head want to explode. That's why I've joined SEMA's Action Network (SAN) and would encourage car guys everywhere to do the same.

I don't have a S/C, so I am not at the 400HP mark. I am not sure what my HP and Torque is. I have it tuned, and additional mods done that put me above factory and I have no way of knowing. I haven't gotten my car dynoed, but I sure would love to one of these days.

I can't remember what happened to my time slips (they just disappeared one day), but due to traction problems, the best I have run the quarter is 13.8ish @ about 110MPH? 0-60 I'd guess is around 3-4 seconds? I honestly have no idea. That's with full tire pressure on street tires (40 psi---most likely the cause of my traction problems) and a little over a half of a tank of gas.

The Shelby Mustang Cobra has the 5.4 DOHC Supercharged engine with 500 hp and 480ftlbs tq. Thats BMW M5 and M6 territory power wise, the M's get only 12mpg city and 18mpg highway.
