The numbers I quoted were for a Shelby GT vs a BMW 335 - I doubt you can haggle too much on the Shelby GT which priced out just $2000 below the 335i.

Again, the HP and fuel economy numbers were just for comparison. Assuming Ford drops a turbo V6 in the Mustang, or if they got smart and dropped a turbo diesel in the Mustang, then the sell prices would be even closer and the cost differential would favor the turbo V6 more, and it would favor the turbo diesel more still. Bottom line - you can equal or exceed the performance of a V8 and get far better fuel economy at the same time. It should be a win/win proposition.

The main thing is that it will not sound like a v-8 and that is a big problem and it ruins tradition. They should just make a direct injection mustang with econ management so it will run on half of the motor when on cruise control. Like on chevys.

The sound of a v8 can never be replaced.

Forgot you were talking about the Shelby GT...

As for the rest, I agree.

Re: Rumor that I have read on the new mustang

Hey, I hear you guys about the sound of a V8 and all that good stuff. But the harsh reality is the Federal CAFE Standard is jumping waaaay up in just a few years so something's gotta give.

At least now we have some decent technology to fall back on, like diesel engines that can actually deliver real performance, or full electric vehicles like the Tesla Roadster that promise mind blowing performance with zero emissions. Yes, a lot of this technology is new and a bit expensive right now, but as production numbers go up the prices will come down. But we don't have a lot of choice in the matter - things are going to have to change, like it or not.

But think back to the last time we had make major changes back in the mid 1970s - we were handed things like Corvettes with 185HP V8 engines and the delightful (NOT) Mustang II. Yawn. And to all you Mustang guys posting in this thread would you rather have 1) a twin turbo V6 that gives you performance like the current Mustang GT but better gas mileage (or even a twin turbo diesel Mustang with equal performance and even better fuel economy) or 2) the return of the Mustang II (a car that should apologize to all other Mustangs for tarnishing that good name)?

              Yeah, I thought so.

you make excellant points Mike. I just wanted to add this. Technology always changes. Just look at some of the advances in the last 35 years in my life cocerning the automotive industry. You just keep up on it and adjust. Its all you can do. Sure we will miss the roar of the V-8. But a differant roar will replace it. Its going to be a fun ride.

One other benefit of turbodiesels is that they usually don't need maintenance as often as gas engines and lasts longer too.

Unless the turbo goes out, and then it usually costs a lot more. Diesel IMO is the way to go as far as commuter/DD cars. I like my unleaded gas weekend cruiser the way it is. I would love to find a diesel to commute in, but right now they cost a bit too much.

I heard a v-6 mustang the other day with flowmasters trying to mimic a v-8 and it just does not sound right. No rumble in it.

Like J.A Michaels said a new sound will replace it. The power that some of these things are going to put out will just blow your mind in a couple years. Did anybody read the new Car and Driver yet? The Challenger SRT-8 was the cover story, simply amazing car!!

Re: Rumor that I have read on the new mustang

Well, as you all know I live in the Caribbean and we get like European and American cultures and things at the same time (even though we are in the American Continent) but we have LOTS of diesel vehicles, not as much as Europe but we do have lots of them and I know that in the beginning you refuse and reject but you get used to it and you later on notice that it isn't that bad.

My father had the 4Runner (diesel version) and people, lots of torque, it's not a performance vehicle, not something like WOW but for a DD it's the BEST! It was a 3.0 4 cylinder turbo engine, now he has a Toyota Fortuner, same engine and thing just a different line. My mother has the SangYoung Rexton, Mercedes Benz built the engine and it's 3.0 V4 Turbo Diesel engine

Looks a Subaru, they are making the Outback and Legacy Diesel for the Europeans and I think in 2009 they'll have it available in USA, Car & Driver made the review of it, talked very nice about it.

Bottom line, it's like Mike said, we have to accept things, doesn't matter. Many auto makers make great diesel engines, things that you can't hear that it's a diesel engine, no vibrations what so ever. Performance wise, in the future, we all saw or know what Audi did in LeMans so the future is not that far away.

Dodge needs to put a 6 speed manual (Viper Tranny) in that challenger.

They're going to. It's just the initial run of 2008 model SRT8s (about 4500) that are available with the Autostick only. Starting with the 2009 model year you can get the 6.1L Hemi (SRT) with manual or auto, the 5.7L Hemi (R/T) is being upgraded to more like 380HP/400lb-ft and will be also be available with either transmission, but the V6 cars will only come with the Autostick. Convertibles are scheduled to appear late 2009 with either the V6 or 5.7L Hemi.

Oh, there is supposedly a 6.4L Hemi making something in excess of 500HP slated for the 2011 model year.
