Originally posted by Rusty Bumper I hear that the oil executives and shareholders are making an ungodly amount of profits this year.
Yes this is true, however has anyone ever looked how much the GOVERNMENT makes per gallon? Correct me if I am wrong, they make, state and federal taxes on gas, 35-60 cents per gallon. Depending on which state. Lets figure out how much they made last quarter!!
Oil companies get around 15 cents.
And I do own mutual funds in oil companies.
Had to play with that one RB. I don't like taxes.
I read that the optimum speed for gas mileage is 60MPH. Jackrabbits stars are bad. I wondered if a detailed car gets better milage, nice and slick!

actually it does. the main reason for fuel consumption (and hence why optimum speed is ~60 mph) is due to aerodynamic drag.
a component of drag is skin friction drag, or the drag caused by the air actually dragging along the surface of the vehicle (as opposed to pressure drag)
so yes, a clayed and waxed car will have less skin friction drag. of course this may account for < 1lb of drag, thereby saving less money in gas than is spent on surface refinement products
I just noticed that the first post in this thread. The person who started the tread was angry because he had to pay 2.03 for 91 octane. I wish it cost that much.

Yeah, I just noticed that I was complaining about 1.70 for premium too.
