I wonder what home heating oil is selling for?
Out of curiosity, today I called the corporate office of a station that I do business with. I asked the rep why their K-1 was so high compared to their gasoline prices.

She told me the reason for that was because they will not drop the price of their product until it's all sold out for the price that they paid for it.

Well, I can understand that, but just a few weeks ago there was a gas station here in NC that refused to raise it's gas prices until the old stock was gone. It seems that the owner didn't think it was right to raise prices on fuel that he had bought at a lower price.

Since the owner refused to listen to the corporate office's orders to raise prices before the old stock was gone, they closed his station!

Actions like that should be illegal.

Haha! That's a funny reason. Around here, I noticed that after the media hype that followed Katrina, all the gas stations raised their prices instantly.

One of the stations that I pass frequently were raising their prices every few hours after the initial jump. I stopped and asked why they were doing that. The answer was that they wanted to be able to afford their next shipment, and they didn't know how expensive it would be.

So regardless of how much the gas in already in their tanks cost them, they were selling for a greatly inflated price. BUT, it took ages for them to lower the price.

I firmly believe that when prices fluctuate, most gas stations end up coming out ahead because they always leave the prices up for longer than it takes them to recoup.

        • This is what I allways thought what would happen....

When prices go up, the gasstations immideatly raise the prices. Their stock is never mentioned..... but when prices go down.... ik takes ages before the gasstations follow.

In Europe, they always tell us we have to pay more because the prices of gas in the USA rize.
But...... we have partially our "own" refineries. Nevertheless the prices are coupled to your gas prices.
          Strange thing, these gas prices.....

But, can you notice people driving less when the prices rize?

Wow that's annoying. What do your gas prices have to do with us? That sounds like an excuse.

I can notice me driving less, lol. When we had the post-Katrina spike, I took the bus until the gas prices settled down. I hate the bus, but it's *really* convenient from where I live. It takes me straight to the subway station which is where I drive to anyway, plus it also saves me the $4 parking fee.

I did notice that the bus was a lot more packed than it was last time I took it (about a year ago) but I have no way of knowing if that was because of the gas prices or not.

            • They say.....
When Americans start using a lot of gas.... like at the start of the winterperiod......
The oil producing countries can't produce enough, thus the prices rize.

The link between Europe and the USA is that the consuming market overseas is enormous.
              Little comparisations...

Here we drive small cars, Volkswagen Polo, Honda's..... wich drive a lot of miles per gallon.
"You" guys drive big trucks, (sorry for the stereotyping) with less and less miles per gallon.

Our houses are maximum sealed to keep the warmth inside, and the cold inside..... houses are always made of 80% brick and cementmortar....
When I see your houses on TV, a lot is made from wood....
So, to keep your houses warm, you have to heat it a lot more than we do......

In all, this means, with the millions of people living in the USA, the oil consumption is high (compared it's very high).

About the people driving lesser miles....
Although our gasprices are over 3 times higher than yours, we don't use the bus more often.
It's not notice-able lesser people take the car......

Strange world this oil thing. Seems like in 20 years or so, it's all gone....

Well, hopefully by the time it's gone we will have cars that use other means of propulsion, and we will still be detailing them.

                • OK, now this is just getting crazy, $2.12 a gallon, yes it has been higher but gas has been over $2.00 for a couple months now and the oil companies are only increasing their profits more and more every time the price of gas/natural gas goes up. It has been a warm winter and natural gas is still high as well.

OK, just needed to vent a little.

                    • It is $2.30 here for regular at the cheap stations. Then again, NC has the fourth highest gas prices in the US. Luckily my car gets about 29 miles to a gallon, hopefully it will keep running (been having car problems lately).
