If it's below the clear coat, then compounding will not fix the problem.

If it were mine, I would do a simple test in a small area using ScratchX, a hand applied paint cleaner, and then compare it to the surrounding area. If the test area looked better, then I would either continue to apply the ScratchX to the entire affected area, or machine clean the area probably with either a PC or a Rotary Buffer. I'm a rotary buffer kind of guy, so that's probably the direction I would lean.

Here's a tutorial on how to use the ScratchX,

How to remove a defect by hand with ScratchX

If you really want to do the test the right way, get some blue painters tape and tape off an area in the middle of the affected area, along the side of the scoop about 6-8 inches long in the direction of the length of the hood. Then apply the ScratchX to this area. Apply at least 2 applications of ScratchX using the directions included in the link above. Then wipe off the residue, remove the tape and inspect your results in good lighting.

If you see an improved difference, then you now the problem is on the surface. If you see no change at all, then chances are good, that the problem is below the surface.

If the problem is in fact below the surface, then you should talk to your painter. This might not be his fault, but it is where the problem will have originated and in order to make it right, the hood will have to be repainted.

sorry to say, but I think the problem with you hood lies with the bondo and paint, not the bondo and nxt. that is one sweet vette, a repaint on the hood out of the question? if it where mine and I could aford it thats what I would do. its to nice of a car to short cut unless I didn't have any choice. good luck

One question that I haven't seen asked or answered, maybe I missed it; How long ago was the scoop installed and the hood painted?

As the light changed from red to green to yellow and back to red again, I sat there thinking about life. Was it nothing more than a bunch of honking and yelling? Sometimes it seemed that way.

            My what a post!

My two cents. I'll bet the problem actually goes back to the primer-basecoat application over the bondo.

Make sure that the hood is well prepped prior to the repaint. I always try to go over a panel with Prepsol several times myself before having a panel repainted. The sealants that we are using can cause bunches of problems with repaints unless they are carefully removed.

By the way. That's a darned nice looking Vette.

the good news he will repaint for free.

I've done a little painting in the past. And this looks like the under products have bleed through the color coat. I think your painter see's this too, by his willingness to repaint for free.
Remember, if this is 2 years old, he really doesn't want to repaint for free, it costs him plenty to redo something thats a week old, let alone 2 years old.

Be happy he wants to make it right for you, most shops would just laugh about it, and charge you another arm and leg.

Just my 2 cents, not that I am a professional painter or anything near it. I build custom model cars and use automotive finishes alot. I also use bondo, I have found that in some cases you get a shadow where the bondo is applied. It seems to me it has something to do with the transition from the base material to the bondo has different drying efects and you end up with a "shadow". Sometimes this shadow takes a while to show up as the bondo cures and the paint cures. I have had problems in the past with white paint doing the same thing that it has done on your hood. The more you polish it the more prevelent the discoloring becomes. I'm guessing the only thing that will remove this is to repaint. It seems strange that this shows up 2 years after painting. I'm guessing it was there all along and the unbelievalbe clarity the NXT gives the paint make it more noticable. I haven't tried NXT on my models yet, but I'll give it a try this winter. I have some photos of one of my models that I had the problem with. I'll see if I can post withing the next couple of days.

One other factor that I didn't think over over the long weekend, but one of our other Reps pointed out was that unlike the rest of the car, the hood is subjected to engine heat which could possibly have had an effect on the Bondo/Primer/Basecoat.
