  • M84 + Wool on rotary = Not enough

I tried working on my dads white Chev Mailbu with M84 on a wool pad. It didn't seem to have any effect on the scratches, even after repeated passes. I know white paint can be a big hassle to work on, so what is my next step? Should I try M105 next?

Yes, M105 and a wool pad would be next in line.

Which wool pad are you using? Some are less aggressive than others.

I'm using the heavier cut one that came with my Makita.

I would go with #85 and see if you have any sucess there and then if not then you can step up to #105 but if you dont already have both and just want to buy one then i guess #105 would be the best option just to be sure. Also make sure the scratches you are trying to remove are not to deep because if they are you might just end up eating right throw the clear coat trying to remove them

Are you trying to remove swirls or isolated scratches?

You can try M105 with the wool pad, the results are great and the finish that M105 leaves behind is amazing.

Both, the swirls I can take out (with a lot of effort) the scratches are proving to be way more difficult. I can't feel the scratch but I can sure see it. I'll have to investigate some M105 I think.

Has the car been repainted? I ask because I've seen at least 2 vehicles lately that have had a clearcoat sprayed over swirls & scratches. The clear may be fine while the imperfections are under the clearcoat. Just a thought.

I just detailed my 2002 Malibu this past weekend. That paint is hard! I barely made any progress with #83 and my DA. I abandoned ship (for now) and just put on a nice coat of #6 topped with a round of #26 until I get some rotary skills.

I used M84 on a rotary with a wool pad...must be hard paint.

I never tried the pads the came with the Makita.

Almost every time, M84 and a wool pad will yield results. It seems to me that the pad is causing a problem. Try one of the So1o pads.

Also, what speed are you working at?

The pad worked fine on my dark blue truck, just not the white paint. Using it at 1,500 rpms.

I recall Mike Phillips said that solid white is one of the hardest paints about due to its physical make up (Contains - Titanium Dioxide)

True, I'm going to see if I can find some M105 locally today.
