  • One of the worst things you can do....

    Hey guys,

I committed a colossal mistake today and I thought sharing it with you might deter some from following my erroneous footsteps. Well, it all began this afternoon. I washed my beautiful Honda CRV and then used Meguiars Ultimate Compound to touch up some swirl marks (it worked great!). Then, I proceeded to apply wax to the back and side of my car. As I removed the wax, I could hardly contain my child-like excitement! The car looked great. Then things took a turn for the worse. Instead of grabbing the wax for the hood of the car, I selected the Ultimate Compound! I applied a liberal coat of UC on my hood and two doors! When I realized I had done this, I was greatly discouraged. I had spent several hours washing and prepping the car and now I have to redo a good portion of it! Even worse, I have conveniently removed a thin layer of paint from two sides of my car!

The point of the story: look at the bottle before applying!

OUCH!!! That *****. I feel bad for you. I've grabbed my UC by mistake but caught it.

That stinks. But, you shouldn't have been applying a liberal amount of wax; only use a thin layer. And don't worry about removing a thin layer of paint because if you applied it like a wax with very little pressure then it removed even less than minimal to no paint.

Man, what a bummer. I guess I should share a lesson I learned a long time ago. Clean as you go. This way "accidents" like this rarely happen.

I feel sorry for you. It really stinks.

Why would you clean half the car with UC and then wax half?

Just wanted to give an update: the car had a significant amount of swirl marks on it after the faux pas. However, I was able to remove them with an additional application of Ultimate Compound. Now the car looks like nothing ever happened. Although it was a big inconvenience, no serious damage was done.

That's why one of my standard practices is to separate the various stages of work and pack the respective products away after each stage.

If I am doing anything more involved that a regular 2-bucket wash, I work the same way.

I doubt UC would cut hard enough to get through the clearcoat and to the paint. Especially by hand.

                            Just my thoughts...

Just one more thing about Meguiars Products that I love: Smell. I could probably tell you which wax was what by the smell alone, just one more way to prevent mixing up the wrong products.
