  • Do you use Clay?

    Hi

Since clay bar is very expensive, they use clay in the cars of your garage wash services, or they only jump this phase?

I love clay. I find that the price is ok since it lasts a long time.

Many detailing services use clay here. Some charge extra for it. Others do it together with other things (wash, wax, polish....) and charge one price for everything together.

      Hi Louvad

See my new thread in the Show Off section re clay. It really is a worth while step. If you use it make sure you lubricate the surface well with the Quick Detailer spray- especially if the paint is not metallic as there could be a slight risk of scratching. I had to be very careful on my black paint as it is so soft!

I like clay. Its easy to sell the benefits of clay to clients. I clay with my detailing service since most client's don't know the benefits of claying and that makes it a difficult up sell. I use the clay service as an opportunity to educate my clients about surface care. Most people have never heard of clay. Plus it doesn't take that long to do.

Scrub - I agree 110% I also use the clay service to educate my customers, and it's a part of my detailing package.

You should give clay a try, you will be pleasantly surprised to see what a difference it makes.

Instead of using clay, you should give Meguiar's Professional Surface Preparation and Polishing products a try. You will be pleasantly surprised to see what a difference they make.

I've read your statements before about clay. Not to sound ignorant nor insolent... Can above surface contaminants be removed with cleaners and polishes that have been applied by hand rather than using clay? If so does your detail service take longer to work the paint extra to remove the bonded contaminants?

Not trying to hijack thread just had to ask and understand.

Yes, surface contaminants can be removed with cleaners and polishes that have been applied by hand.

Since I do not use clay, I have no idea if it takes longer to work the paint extra to remove bonded contaminants.

When you consider the variety of paint cleaners and polishes currently available, there is no reason why anyone has to rely entirely on the use of clay to remove surface contaminants.

Frank, if you give the clay a try, you might find that the time it takes you to remove those contaminates goes way down. Buy a bar and give it a try.

                          Just my 2 cents...

I started using cclay last year and although it's costly, I don't think I would want to do without it now, as it really preps the surface well and saves you time.

We use clay nearly everyday. It pulls **** out of the paint, and it leaves the paint extremely smooth and shiny. Buy some. I can't imagine detailing without it.

I use clay on my own cars, but until this last detail of a Ford Focus, never on a customer's car. It had NEVER been waxed and only occasional gas station automatic washes. There was so much rail dust & other yeeeck stuff on the lower body. The rotary wasn't taking it of (I'll admit I was too afraid to really work the rotary that hard on a customer's car), so I brought out the clay. 15 minutes later, I had a pristine surface to work with.
