Washing the pads by hand with Dawn has worked great for me. The only catch is it takes forever for those pads to air dry. This might work better in the winter with dry indoor air. Sometimes rather than just wash the pads I buy new ones with the rationale I'll wash the older ones later. Meanwhile, the pads keep accumulating!
I would not want to risk putting the pads in a dryer. That is probably what does them in.
