Like so many things in our state, I'm betting NC Gov. is way off.

I know that water is a precious commodity, but at-home car washing is getting a bum rap in NC compared to watering lawns. During our last drought, our city prohibited at-home car washing, but gave the green light for watering lawns three times a week at night.

I can't think of a worse way to waste water than by leaving the sprinkler on for several hours. Something just doesn't add up here.

I wrote our elected officials and let then know how I felt about it, and one of the council members tended to agree with me. I mean, what's the difference in me washing my car on my lawn while the neighbor next door waters his lawn three times a week? We are both doing the same thing. It's just that I am letting the water touch my car before the grass gets some too.

Not to mention that I am using much less water than my neighbor.

See Rusty, the problem is you're not washing your car at night! There's your solution... that, or ONR in your garage.

I have a feeling we will all see the limits of car washing increase in the future. If you don't have a low pressure, low water solution in your back pocket, you'll be screwed.

I agree. Given the water shortages around the country--and they are only going to get worse!--I am surprised that Meguiar's has not come out with a product that is equivalent, if not superior, to ONR. IMHO, a quick detailer is not a substitute for a real wash, whether waterless or waterfull. I'm certainly not going to use a quick detailer when my car is filthy. I know I have instilled swirls in my black Honda through by using a quick detailer when I should have washed it. Moreover, it should have been stated at some point in the news report that if one is going to use a quick detailer to keep one's car clean, one needs to use it on a daily basis. Meguiar's is behind the curve here when it should be ahead of the curve. IMHO.

Apparently they have considered this type of product, but at the time, felt it was not what Megs wanted to promote:

Last time I washed I checked the water meter before and after and I used 60 gal. I just use a hose with a standard 7 setting nozzle.

Also working on paint while wearing bling just makes me .

Hehe...Actually I did most of my car washing at night.

One time I was cleaning my car in broad daylight, and an officer showed up. I thought I was going to get a ticket, but, to my surprise, he began to ask me how to detail certain car parts!

Before he left, I asked him about the car washing ban, but he said that he had more important things to do than to enforce water rules.

IMO, last touch works but just doesn't work as well as ONR.

I'm sure Meguiars could make an equivalent product to ONR, but ONR is so famous and has so many followers that not enough people would use the Meguiars product because they know ONR works great. So there would be no reason for ONR users to switch unless Meguiars undercut the price of ONR.

Or made a superior product. ONR is good stuff, but there is always room for improvement.

Not to mention, ONR may have a decent following to us on the forum community, but 99.9999% of people shopping at Wal-Mart or Autozone wouldn't have a clue what ONR was.

How do they restrict water? I have never heard of that. What do they do fine you? Take away your water rights? I would be fighting that because that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I would have to break that law on purpose just because that is so stupid. I would be the guy watering the my lawn and washing my car at the same time just to make them mad.

Water isn't unlimited, and from what I hear Cali has major shortages due to population and drought conditions? I guess you can wash your car and water your lawn at the same time theres nothing stopping you. What would you do when you go to water the lawn and nothing comes out of the tap?

They would actually send you a letter and a fine after a certain amount you go over.

It sounds ridiculous, but unless someone really high in political power that happens to be a normal detailer says something, we're SOL and just have to find a way around it.

ONR or other rinseless products is the way to go right now.

Things got so bad in Atlanta last year that a forum member / pro car detailer was forced to buy water in jugs and show the receipt to the water police, or possibly get arrested. I believe he used the ONR type of wash too.

Fortunately, the drought in the south has eased up quite a bit - thank God.

Sorry for hijack, but does anybody know how much water it usually takes to wash a typical car?

Will depend upon the water pressure and the length of time running the water.

Where I live there is only 10% left in the dams ... at this rate we will run out of water next year. One thing that has happened is that a generation is growing up respecting the natural resource that is water. Short showers, no watering the garden, bucket only washing the car.

I'm lucky - I have a rain water tank and pump, so use that to wash the car. That is a delight after using the bucket only method. I also collect rain water in containers and use that to water the garden. The hardest for me is the short showers ...
