I second this remedy as factual. Pile up instant grits or corn meal in and around their hills; once eaten, the grits expand inside them.

Here are some more 'home remedies':

One cup fresh, or half cup dried, spearmint in a blender. Fille the blender with water and pulverize for 30 seconds. Strain the liquid and spray infested areas twice a week until problem is solved.

    4 to 5 tbsp cornmeal
    3 tbsp bacon grease
    3 tbsp baking powder
    3 packages of yeast
Mix cornmeal and bacon grease into a paste, then add other ingredients. Dab mix on the inside of jar lids and set near ant hills.

    1 cup sugar
    1 tbsp boric acid powder
    3 cups water
Add sugar to water and boil. Then add boric acid powder. Place mix in small jar lids and set in the middle of ant trails or near hills.

    1 tbsp. of bakers' yeast
    2 tbsp. of sugar
Mix in 1 pint of water; spread this mixture on pieces of cardboard, and place around the yard.

Mix and spray 50% human urine, 50% water. While kind of gross, this is actually good for repelling lots of other insects as well as critters. According to my source, the older the urine, the better.

I'll dig around and see if I can find some more...

Not trying to get off topic here, but I read in the paper recently that urine was once used by old timers to kill off a foot fungus.

My brother-in-law has had athlete's feet for as long as he can remember. At one point, after many different treatments would not remedy the problem, he was told to urinate on his feet while taking a shower to help kill the fungus. Of course, I don't think it helped that he had to buy special shoes as his is 6'7" and has size 17 feet

When I was four years old, my parents took me to visit relatives in Hawai'i (Big Island). I remember having to stand behind a privacy screen of somesort to go into a cup. My great uncle had apparently stepped on a sea urchin while surf fishing. The urine was supposed to ease the pain of the sting.

If you want to kill ants IN the house and not use any toxic insecticides, try mixing in a spray bottle a mix of 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water. Add a few drops of Dawn also.
