  • Ants!!!!!!!!

I'm so sick of battling ants that I don't know what to do. I have tried just about everything over the counter with little success. Anyone have any suggestions? Mail order isn't a problem but the prices of some of the exterminators IS.

We fought a good fight for over a year, but in the end the ants we're winning. We opted to go with a monthly visit from an Exterminator in are area as the ants are incredibly bad. We also have Black Widows everywhere so he takes care of these guys too...

      Hey,

Where is your ant problem? Outside or inside?

I have not had issues with ants inside the house, but on the outside, we used a product called Bug-B-Gone and it worked like a charm! But for the inside, hopefully someone here will have some suggestions for you.

Have you tried Malathion Plus? Made by Ortho, you mix it in a sprayer... It is some bad stuff! I use it around the outside of my house and it kills ants! Then if need be I set some Terro (clear gel stuff) around the inside of the house if needed it is MUCH less toxic and "pet safe".

It must be thousands of ants in mt driveway... from time to time in the summer and this combo takes care of the problem.

They're of the "Argentine" variety. I haven't tried the Malathion as I have a couple small kids. I will look into the gel product as that is what I'm looking to use indoors. If it happens to work outside that's good too.

My home has a raised foundation so whatever can easily be spread underneath.

Funny.......We were just talking about ants last night, and someone said that plain ole grits (Uncooked) will take care of them. It seems that after the ants eat the grits, the grits expand after the ant goes for water and it kills the ant.

At least that's what I was told.

You can also give uncooked rice to birds and it will swell up in their bodies and kill them too.

Might be a good way for some cities to get rid of excess pigeons.

You may have to go to your local nursery (real one, not orchard or home depot) and pickup some Maxide ant killer. This is a very powerful insecticide that you can use diluted in water (about a tspn per gallon) and sprayed from your garden sprayer. This product has always worked well around our house on a variety of ants. Good luck, I hate ants too.

One thing about ants coming in the house, is that they tend to follow a scent path to and from their source. If I see ants in the house, then I will try to follow their trail to see where they are coming in the house at, and I will start spraying there.

This method has worked well for me in the past.

When Diazinon concentrate was available in CA I was winning and it worked for 9-12 months. All the stuff that's available over the counter now is pretty weak. The pro's seem to be charging waaaay too much money (yeah, I know). I feel that given the proper goods that I can do just as good a job for hundreds less. I'd be looking at no less than $500 for the year to have someone do the work and I have lots more free time than that.

If all else fails and I know where the ants hole is there's an easy but effective way to kill the mount. First please don't do this in an enclosed area or where anything might catch fire. Get a can of carbuerator cleaner that has a straw on it. Insert straw down ant hole as far as possible and give a few sprays. Now light on fire and it should go down in their hole and kill the queen and eggs.

Also, when using ant baits don't put them directly on the hole if you find it, they'll just move it. You have to pretend you accidentally dropped it near their hole or path, I sware they can tell your trying to get rid of them sometimes.
                      Later,
                      Ricky

I was talking to a man that worked at a farm supply store a few years ago, and he told me that whenever a company makes a great insecticide (Like Diazinon), that the competition will petition the goverment to declare it unsafe for humans to use.

I was skeptical at first, but he told me that he has went to a lot of conventions about this type of thing.

In WWII, the GI's would shoot caves with flame throwers to kill all that were inside. It seems that the flame itself would **** all of the air out of the cave and enemy soldiers would die just from the lack of oxygen.......And not have a burn on them!

Maybe this is the way the ants die too?

I truly do believe this! As long as the product was used properly there were no obvious ill effects. It did however for just a few bucks keep the awfully expensive pest control guys away and anything that crawled for that matter. Funny thing is, a pest control guy that I hired told me what to use. A true nice guy he was but he's also no longer in business.
