I get about 35+ mpg even with 8100 available revs so it doesn't bother me near as much.
(Perhaps a drastic price increase will force manufacturers to produce more efficient motors.) The same thing was said during the so-called 'Oil Embargo' of 1973, and here it is 32 years later, and little has changed. I'm afraid that prices will continue to escalate, supplies will dwindle, hot air will abound, and most of us will simply get bled drier than the Wells the Oil came from.

It seems like your poll was really just an excuse to rant. If your gasoline is really going up 3-12 cents every day then maybe it's time to move, as this is not even close to the norm in the rest of the United States.

Wow... Yeah, cars still make about 130hp on average, just like in 1973, and get about 11mpg, just like in 1973... Hardly anything has changed at all.

If you are driving a car from the 1960's on cruise nights, then it's no surprise that you are getting the same economy now that you did back in 1973...

Not rant, just comment on a sorry situation, hurting a lot of unfortunate folks, created by a number of factors, including plain ole human greed.

You would think that what with all the advancements that have been made in engines, electronics, and emission control, as well as better fuels, that a V-8 engine would be getting about 30MPG by now.

I have heard of some of the LS motors getting that kind of MPG on the freeway.

I would think that in a time of "high" gas prices soccer moms would drive more fuel efficient vehicles, yet they are still purchasing large SUV's. I guess minivans aren't cool enough?

I detailed an Eddie Bauer last week (Late model) and I was surprised at how small it was inside, compared to the outside!

My wife drives a Dodge Carvan that has much more room in it than most SUV's do.

I personally think that a mini-van, (while not the same status symbol than an SUV) is more practical to use for everyday living.

You can certainly pack a lot more in them.

I agree Rusty Bumper....our minivan has much more room in it than many of my friends SUV's....in fact, the "status symbol" of the SUV is quickly changing to a stigma of gas hog....minivans can look very "sexy" if one takes the time necessary to take care of them...we've had minivans in our family for 14 years mainly because of the kids...I think the stigma attached to them is a shame..they are very versatile....what mom wouldn't like driving this ?

The Pick-Up Truck with the permanent steel cap, a.k.a. the large sized S.U.V., has become the modern day equivalent of the old 'Station Wagon' that the U.S. car manufacturers did away with, for the most part.

In so far as fuel mileage goes, the headache here, is whether your vehicle gets 1 mpg, or 100 mpg, it's still burning what has become some very expensive dinosaur juice. I suppose that as long as greed rules, and there's enough of left to sell, the price will continue to escalate, and someone will buy the stuff. It would have been nice though if some of the effort that was being expended for a short time after the escapades of 1973, hadn't been, pretty much abandoned

The oil glut of the 1980's took care of that, and the gradual increase of the speed limit from 55 mph to whatever it is now.

Also, people just got tired of the small, weak, 4 cylinder cars & trucks.

But Washington had better do something soon, instead of caving in to the special interests groups, such as big oil and the auto makers.

Interesting to see how that Poll has turned out. Wonder what it would take before the results came out opposite from what they are now?
