First off, RADAR cannot be "focused" onto one car out of a group of cars. RADAR covers everything. Think of it as a cone. As it leaves the antenna, it gets wider and wider the further out it travels. LIDAR is what is pinpoint. Its like shooting fish in a barrel.

The Trooper wasn't singling you out, or profiling you. He merely activated his RADAR to clock a vehicle he was interested in. You just happened to be in the area.

It is not uncommon, especially on busy roads like I-4, for an LEO to clock cars that are close to the car. I've clocked people at distances less than 100 feet. As for the Trooper being in the open, great! We aren't suppose to hide. In fact, FHP's policy prohibits hiding while conducting speed enforcement.

    Hope this helps.

Not supposed to hide???? Here in Missouri one guy sits on a overpass with LIDAR with several LEO's on the on ramp out of site. LIDAR does spread its beam but not near as much as RADAR.
If coming through KC be on the look out for a Ford F-250,dark blue..........

I do respect LEO's for it is a thankless job.

A new thing here is the license plate recognition system, I notice a few squad cars have these devices on deck lid.

I know if Iplay fast I will possibly have to pay the price. Just today FHP took aim at me on I-4 in my car in my avatar. What he didnt realize was that A) I saw him way out of range B) I dont understand why he would have shot my car with KA band at 300ft or less. He was in plain view and I was at the tail of a pack of cars traveling 70 in a 65. I would call that profiling. Could you give me your opinion from a LEO's point of view why he might have done that??. I do run a radar detector and dont expect a break from any LEO . I use my rd as a tool just as you guys use your rd guns and have no hard feelings towards any officers that catch me.

Again as many have said Thank You for being out there for us if we need you.

Who does? Heck, we're just like everyone else; we make mistakes, too. When I've done something wrong while driving, i think "good grief, its a good thing there wasn't a cop around!"

Radar is def not obsolete. X-band radar is. Expect for one county is TX that is still using it. Only like 20% of US officers use laser. Mostly State agencies. U can pick up laser interference that bounces off of other cars, espically if there is a lot of traffic on the road. The is why it is very important to never speed alone. I always make sure i have a rabbit. And yes, Laser Jammers and Viel protection are being looked into for added protection....but im not a HUGE speeder and personally right now I dont beilieve it is feesible to add a $1,000+ in a jamming system.....

Thanks Colin. U kno, i just wanna say thanks for being an LEO. Its VERY dangerous and it takes A LOT to do what u do. U risk it everyday to make sure that things run smoothly. I may not "LOVE" leo's when i get caught doing something wrong (speeding), but when ever I NEEDED yall, yall got there and did the job right. Thanks for what you do, seriously. Keep it up. Re: Radar detector!!

Having driven large 50,000 lb+ vehicles most of my adult life. I recognize the importance of looking well ahead. If you don't you die, or you kill someone, it's as simple as that. There are lots of gauges that you need to keep an eye on. Again, if you don't check them, you could die or kill someone. Personally I check my mirrors about every 7 seconds and I look ahead up to 20 seconds. I try to double the 2 second rule to 4 seconds in the city. I'm well aware of my surroundings. Taking a moment to check your gauges and mirrors is simple if you are already driving defensively.

p.s. on my motorcycle I feel uncomfortable if I go more that 4 seconds without checking my mirrors. I've timed it many times, because I train new riders. Using their mirrors frequently is usually the most difficult thing for new riders to get used to, but it saves lives.

It's funny how people think it's okay to text and drive or talk on their cell phones, but here we are talking about people being so focused on the road that they can't even check their speed.

That time spent checking the speedometer could have been used to check your mirrors.

Like you say it takes about 1 second to check your speedometer. In that one second you could have reduced your speed by 18.5 MPH in full panic breaking if something would have happened requiring evasive action.

    RamAirV1

No, I stated it takes a split second.

18.5 mph? Where are you getting that number from? The coefficient of friction is different for every road surface. The decelleration factor, among many other things, is going to determine how much speed is scrubbed off during braking.

WOW.....be glad you didn't grow up with my parents.... You wouldn't have been lucky enough to get a 20 year old Ford Escort!! If you wanted a car, your saved up your money to get one.....LOL

I've never had a problem with checking my speed while looking forward, it's called peripheral vision.

I've been driving for many years and I don't have to stare at my speedo to maintain my speed. It takes a split second to glance at my speedo to check my speed. Really its no different than checking my mirrors every 15 seconds or so. I realize no one does that anymore, either.
