MOL has helped me a lot though.

Pretty much sums things up for me. Burned edges, went through clear coat when machine sanding, cracked paint, etc... learned by myself since I dont have anyone here locally that can /would teach me to detail cars.

MOL has definitely helped; Mike Phillips, Todd Helme, Kenneth@fishbonez, Tim Lingor, Darren @ AutoDetailer Malaysia, Clark @ Polished Bliss, David @ dsms; these are the online people that I have learned much from either from their advises or just awesome writeups.

Big thank you to these people.

Thanks Bill. I can take a jab with the best of them!

Like a lot of the 'older' guys said above, learn by doing. Screwing it up, redoing...well, you get the picture.

With the internet, the learning curve has really taken a good turn. The ability to read, interact, try and then 'get ur done' has been the best thing since sliced bread and zippers.

My father taught me how to wax back when I got my first car. He didn't know anything about surface prep, but the family car usually looked better than those around us. He used a wax called "Blue Diamond".

I kept my own first car well waxed for about 10 years. When I bought my second car (my first new one) in 2005, I was reading some forums about cars and there was a detailing section. One guy's posts were very interesting as his car was really swirl-free. Not a professional, but a guy with a passion. He described the basics of clay bar, paint cleaner and polish, and mentioned he uses NXT to seal the work. That led me to my first Meguiar's buy. The rest is history.
