  • Who taught you to detail

Who taught you to detail? This is one of those questions that I had been wondering about and had to ask. When I say detail I mean getting into the little nooks on a car that most everyone else eather forgets, or never thinks about. I have seen some amazing detail jobs on here and wanted to ask.

If I ask this question the I had better be willing to answer it. I actually read a book about Booker T. Washington and how he was able to get into school when the teacher was not sure if he should be able to. He had to sweep a room making sure that he got every corner and did not miss anything. Because of this, he was able to go to school. He learning what it ment to pay attention to detail, he is known as the founder of Tuskegee University. That's my story.

Re: Who taught you to detail

No one ever taught me to "detail" a car.Detailing cars has been a lifelong hobby for me and I just learned from trial and error over the past 50 years. My first car was a 1961 Renault Dauphine and it wasn't much of a car to look at but I loved to drive a clean car. I kept working at it over the years and have learned lots of little tricks to making cars shiny.

        the 3M corporation

        Mike Stoops
        Mike Pennington
        Mike Phillips

At least they're the three I plan to implicate

Seriously, the 3 Mikes have been instrumental in not only teaching me to detail, but enjoying it as an enthusiast hobby just as much. The free Detailing 101 and Advanced classes gave me an invaluable foundation that helped me to discover a set of skills I didn't know I had.

All of that knowledge is continually reinforced by the equally enjoyable TNOG's and the great advice from the MOL community.

Many thanks to Barry Meguiar and the fine professionals at Meguiars for having the vision and generosity to share their passion for cars in general and automotive detailing in particular.

Re: Who taught you to detail

There was no one around when I first got into cars so I started teaching myself through reading and experimenting. I took my time and started slowly and what ever I did had to make sense or otherwise I tried it on someone else's car!!

Re: Who taught you to detail

Basically I always had the passion of detailing. Found mol and started to learn a lot. Then had the opportunity to go to Meguiar's traveling road show when they came to Tampa Florida. The class was taught by Mike Phillips.

So basically, The right way was taught my Meguiar's.

Self-taught, with the assistance of MOL. Most everyone I know and helped wash cars with never fathomed the "details" in detailing, much less cared. So it was all up to me.

The Junkman taught me everything I know. ;-) Just kidding Junkman. I know you've been on the forum lately, just having some fun with you. I've watched some of your videos. They are fun to watch and informative.

I've learned a lot from the Autogeek Show Car Garage videos, particularly the Dual Action Polisher videos. They explain things in depth and don't overlook the details. Often it's the little details, I pick up in this videos, that help me refine my techniques.

I've learned a quite bit from Joe's (Supreme Shine) videos. I'm humbled every time I see his work. It inspires me to carry on and take it to the next level. I've learned what passion in detailing is all about and where it will take you.

Most of the stuff I have learned, comes from reading this forum... going out and applying what I read, then coming back and asking questions. Lots of good info in Tuck91's "Show off you Lastest Work" posts, particularly the product links. It's great to see the results and then quickly link to the product used.

Re: Who taught you to detail

This is an interesting question, Sleepy. It has brought out some wide ranging responses. As a child, I had an Uncle that always managed to keep their Oldsmobile 88 series sedan sharp looking even though they lived out in the country on a gravel road. He also was one of the two primary influences on me doing as much of my own maintenance as I can on my vehicles. The other was the dad of a buddy of mine growing up. Then the buddy - who was about 4 years older than me - got his own car - a '71 Monte Carlo and that took it to another level.
Now around 35 or 40 years later I have taken it to another level - partly due to personal desire and satisfaction, partly due to the better resale value, all with the help of the group here at the MOL forum.....

MOL has helped me a lot though.

Re: Who taught you to detail

My dad was a mechanic and his shop had a body shop, so I was around cars a lot. He would leave his truck for me to clean up on different days when I was starting at about age 12 on. So, it was him plus trial and error, especially when I got my own car to play with.
