  • Went crazy with sandpaper! 56k beware

I have an old iPod touch, I got it the day it came out. All that time in my pocket really did it's trick to marring up the stainless finish on the back of it.

As i'm sure you all know, stainless is quite a hard metal that only crazy people try to polish by hand.

To polish it I got some 180, 220, 4hundredsomething, 600, and 1500 grit sandpaper. I wanted to attempt to sand them polish out the scratches on the back of my 'pod.

    Before starting,

    After the 200 grit YIKES!

    After 4xx grit

    600grit

My CF filled up here do I had to switch to my iphone camera. This was after the 1500grit vertically, horizontally, then crosshatched many times over. Then I went over it with some Stainless steel cleaner.

Here you can see the swirls that are left over, I want to get some 2000grit and heavy RC to see if I can get the minor swirls out. You can only see them in direct light, otherwise its a mirror finnish.

That's actually really cool. The touch screen on my camera has a few scratches but sanding a touch screen really would not work.

                Cool!

Are you going to try to get the remaining swirls out with UC or M105 or similar?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I may try to use UC to finish (It might not even make a difference on stainless steel), but first I really want to find a "tougher" compound. Maybe one made for brass or titanium if such a thing exists. If not, I'll just try some wheel polishing compound. There are not many products out there for the hand polishing of stainless! I may just have to make due with what I get.

Update: I hit it with some 2000 grit sandpaper then some mag wheel polish. There are very few swirls left, and those that are left are only seen under direct light. I'd say that basically have a mirror finish.

If you need another backing let me know. I bought a backing from Gigapascal that is coated in TiAlN and its unscratchable. You pop the old cover off and put this one on. I have the gloss black one as well so I don't need the extra. Its gold color btw
