Of all the cars I've filled up at 7-11, not one has had a gasoline related failure. I'd put _way_ more stock in using good oil vs gasoline.

I would actually put 7-11 probably in the middle. I would say something like Sam's Club or a Fleet Farm is the low grades that I would not put in my car. I agree on the quality motor oil as well, I use a full synthetic and go about 4-5K on my oil changes. It's like anything else, people have opinions and preferences about everything.

Casey's 87 with up to 10% ethanol. I get worse mileage with any grade higher. Even though regular unleaded is more than the premium.

Re: Which gas do you use in your car and why??

I just fill up at the Kroger Fuel Center. Been going there for more than 4 years, never had a problem. I used to put regular unleaded in my car, but I recently switched to premium, and it does seem to run better with premium in it. Better for the spark plugs too. Seems like I'm getting a bit better gas mileage as well, although I haven't actually done the math on that one. Oh well.

Shell V-Power gas and Mobil 1 Synthetic oil. City MPG is 22, highway on cruise control set to 75 is 27. Not bad for a 3.8 V6

TTG does not compare gasolines... it only places certain requirements on those companies that _choose_ to join.

I'm guessing a few other people have the same vehicle as you do yet I'm betting few, if any, have the same complaints. So I'd venture to say it's something unique to your vehicle that is causing this.
Actually I believe your guess may be wrong.

I know two other owners of the same year and model who do have the same issue with sulfur smell when burning cheap gas that has inadequate detergents. Top Tier gas has a specific level of detergents, over and above the government level mandated.

I have this odor issue with cheap gas and it disappears with top tier gas. This isn't something I just believe, it is also something I can smell.

Lexus has been all over the car on three occasions and it is tuned properly. They suggested the top tier solution and it works for me. They also said that many others have reported this issue so it is not just me. Their solution is to burn top tier gas.

If you read the info at the toptier site your would notice that this is not a program pushed by gasoline retailers, it is from the automakers.

GM began recommending Top Tier gasoline in every vehicle owner’s manual beginning with the ’07 model year.

Car and Driver seems to add credence to this here: http://www.caranddriver.com/features..._stuff.-column

Re: Which gas do you use in your car and why??

Higher octane fuels are better, but costly. My car runs well with it,but the ECU is not designed to bounce back and forth with different octanes. So if I revert back to premium,it can upset the timing a bit. Most up to date sports cars have ECU's which can cope with this.

Generally speaking the higher octanes have more detergents in them aswell.

I only stay away from supermarket stations. Although there is a lot of controversy about this,I know plenty people who don't care about their cars much, but have said they feel their cars sluggish after using the supermarket gas. They don't know about this,so it's not phsycological. There was also a case in England a couple of years ago where a lot of cars broke down after using supermarket gas.

                  Just my 2 bob.

I use the cheapest, mainly because I drive a Volvo for my daily driver and have no attachment to it. Car gets me from point A to B, can't complain.

As mentioned, there are only a few refineries and all stations in the same area obtain their gas from the same refinery. The difference is only the additives placed in the gas. What stations _won't_ tell you is what they add to the gas. So there is no way to know which gas is better then the next.

This is the thing... there is nothing to show that non-TTG is any worse or better then TTG. Again, TTG is not an independent testing company. As you mentioned it's headed up by vehicle manufacture and simply performs the test for company that want to be considered "TTG". Ford is in bed with BP... GM is in bed with TTG. In that Ford recommends BP gas do you think BP gasoline is better then TTG? It very well could be! There is no test that shows otherwise.

Hess,87 octane. I have noticed that when I burn BP, or Shell I suffer from a 2-3 drop in my mpg. So I will stick with Hess.

I agree I notice our vehicles run better with top tier gas which we use Chevron and some Texaco.

Be happy to. You are incorrect in your assumptions that they are the same, at least as far as Shell gas.

                                This from Shell: http://www.nealswheals.com/NealsVisi...tion_FINAL.pdf

What are the detergency levels in Shell gasoline?

                                Regular and Mid Grade
                                • 2x government standards
                                • Meets TOP TIER standard
                                Shell V-Power
                                • 5x federal government standards
                                • Meets TOP TIER standard

                                Cheap gas - all grades
                                • 1x government standard
                                • Does not meet TOP TIER standard

You will notice that Shell V-Power contains significantly more detergents than their regular and mid grades.

Here is a CNN link: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-10185640-48.html
Shell claims that its nitrogen-enriched gasoline cleans better than before and protects better against engine buildup. Of note, all three grades of gasoline will contain the nitrogen-enriched detergents, with its V-Power premium grade containing five times the government-mandated amount. The results are fewer intake deposits, cleaner combustion chambers, and less fuel injector fouling and intake valve sticking.
                                And from Popular Mechanics: http://www.reuters.com/article/press...09+PRN20090806
Industry research has proven that a clean engine results in better fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and overall optimal vehicle performance. That's why BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota introduced a TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standard to enhance detergency performance of gasoline to address problems with engine deposits. Volkswagen and Audi have since become additional sponsors of this standard, which is more stringent than the government standard for detergency. All Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines have been successfully tested against the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standard and have been certified as a TOP TIER gasoline. Shell V-Power(R), the premium grade gasoline, boasts the highest concentration of the Shell Nitrogen Enriched cleaning system. With five times the amount of cleaning agents required by federal government standards, Shell V-Power is designed to help improve engine performance and efficiency, especially for vehicles that recommend or require a premium gasoline.
