  • Black Paint - Glutton For Punishment or Smart Move?

I've come to a cross-roads with my current vehicle. Down one road, I see myself keeping my 2001 King Ranch Edition F-150 SuperCrew for a long time. The other road leads directly to my dealership where there's a 2005 King Ranch F-150 (new body style - new interior) with my name on it.

Now, I know some of you aren't 'truck' fanatics but, I've been one for a long time and don't really plan on changing. What you need to know is that my truck isn't really treated like a truck. It's more of an everyday driver garage queen. For example, my 2wd King Ranch has only seen three or four gravel roads in the three years I've had it.

The catch is that the new truck is black and, while I love black, I know the pain that many of you speak of when it comes to maintaining an everyday driver of the black paint variety.

With that in mind, am I simply walking up to the edge of making myself miserable because I'm such a stickler for keeping the paint perfect or, am I missing a huge opportunity to REALLY show off with a stellar Meguiar's finish?

It seems that everyone I've ever talked to says the same thing. It typically goes something to the effect of:

Black paint sure is pretty when it's clean but, I swear I'll never buy a black vehicle for my own use...
So, let's hear some opinions. My Chestnut Brown (metallic maroon) isn't cake to take care of but, I've got it in very good, very manageable shape (so much so that the dealership where I'm trading offered me a couple of side detailing jobs for friends and family). I've done my math homework and my payments are in the same ballpark and, with a Ford 'Z-Plan' pin number at my disposal and burning a hole in my pocket, it's a tough deal to walk away from honestly.

    Black or not?

IMO, there is not much that looks better than a clean, clear black paint job. Problem is keeping it clear more so than clean. I am a big fan of using the leaf blower to dry my car and prevent micromarring. And after a few washes I'll hit it with QD.

I haven't used a drying towel since the car had maybe 6 or 8 wash jobs. Anyway, if you decide on the black get a leaf blower and the hell with what the neighbors think. Good luck.

      Go with the Black!

I have a black 2004 f-150 lariat and a black 02 Mustang convertible, both with black leather interior. Both are daily drivers and I too strive to keep both looking their absolute best and found it is not that difficult if you have the time. I wash both of mine at least once a week and will wax them at least once a month. Of course, the mustang is easiest as it is smaller and no dogs allowed. The truck probaly gets more abuse, inside and out, with hauling dogs and kids around. It also sits outside all the time as it will not currently fit in the garage (too many hours cleaning the autos and not the garage!)

The biggest problem I have is with the idiots that use thier car doors as battering rams (two door dings in the F-150) and on the mustang, a lot of chips in the hood.

I learned a great deal form you and the others on this forum and
I know you take great care of your truck just from reading your posts and that you know how to do so I think taking care of a black versus any other color for you will not be much more difficult.

        I agree with that!

RP I had the same question in my mind before I bought my L.... I really wanted a white one, the dealer would not "deal" on it but I found I black one at another dealer that I did not want but they would "deal" on it. After alot of thinking I went for the black one and I am glad that I did!

It seems you spend some time on your truck as I do. I try to wash mine 2 times a week, wax about once a month and a full detail (clay/cleaner/polish/wax) every 2-3 months (it does get a little hard in the winter). I have found you just have to be more careful how and what you wash with and as everyone says can't beat black when its clean. I nolonger use a QD when I have a light coating of dust on the truck (as I did with my white S10) I always go for a wash, just to be on the safe side. As russell336 mentioned blow out the cracks and what not with and air compressor or leaf blower. Water spots can be a pain so I always QD right after a wash to eliminate water spots and give some extra pop.

If you have the time and are willing to take care of it I say go for it.

I'm on my second black vehicle now and there are plenty of times I pull my hair out over it, he he, almost literally but it's still worth it to me. You have to be incredibly meticulous. Black challenges your detailing skills like no other color but from that you get to be better and better at detailing and your hard work really pays off. That is the reward of black: when it's detailed properly, it's in a league of it's own, just no color like it !

I have a love/hate relationship with my black truck. It's a daily driver and only sees a garage when it needs its oil changed, Even dirty it out shines newer veh parked next to it (that's the love part) after reading lots of helpful hints and procedures here on how to keep it looking it's best, it seem the better you get the black the more you can see every nick, ding and imperfection the veh has to offer...oh is that a speck of wax left behind?...nope it another nick to add to the nick map. (that's the hate part) Black is so unforgiving.

I agree with everybody when they say "black trucks are beautiful" but they are near impossible to keep that way.

Good luck on you choice if you decide to go that way, I'm sure you will post a before and after pics when you get it.

                LOL! Classic.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm having a tiny bit of an electrical problem with my current truck which is pushing me towards the new one (okay, I didn't need any pushing... )...

Black it may be. I'm still hesitant as heck but, if there was ever a time in my life where I could pull it off, it'd be now. Kids aren't here yet but, they're on the radar with the wife and, once that happens, the time factor will be dramatically reduced (if not totally removed).

                Wait and see! Thanks again!

Honestly, as much as I love how my black 626 looks when it is clean, I highly doubt I will ever get a black vehicle again. Too much work, every time someone brushes up against it and mars the paint, I end up breaking out the PC to remove the imperfections, etc. I just am too picky about my car to stay happy with black paint.
