    You're close. It's a '69 Buick GS400 or GS350, most likely a GS400. I'll search around a bit for the original image.

I can't find the original image. The chrome grille has been painted and the ugly wheels are not stock, but I'll still go with 1969 Buick GS400.

        Bill,
Do all GSxxx's have mid-hood scoops? This car has scoop near windshield. Is the Skylark a different car vs the Grand Sport? The drivers side mirror seems lower than 68gs400.
Grand sports don't seem to have emblems on drivers front fender near door.

Good point Ron. The grille looks "69, but the rest of the car says '68. Hood scoops didn't come along until 1969 and the horizontal chrome at the rear of the fender is '68. It's definitely a "68 GS, but I still can't pick up 350 or 400 from the badges.

You may have to look at the original pic closely to see whether it's a 350 or 400. The mirrors are likely non-stock, as all the Buick mirrors from that time period were mounted at the top of the door. I don't remember the body-colored mirrors coming until 1970 on the Skylark.
BTW, here's a link to a bunch of older showroom brochures that I use to boost my fading memory:http://www.lov2xlr8.no/broch1.html

As for your other question, Buick went the same route with the GS as Pontiac did with the GTO. At first, they were called a Skylark GS, just like the '64 Tempest GTO, but after a couple years were spun off as separate models.

I was born 60 years ago as the son of a mechanic, so I guess my gearhead status was inherited. Sometimes I'll visit that page looking for something in particular and get lost there for hours.

billy, back on 10/1/2011 you found the pic he used. you said it was 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe. that guess did not work.

It's definitely a '40 Chev. Only thing I can think of is that we may not have used a full description, which would be 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe Cabriolet.
Here's an original image from the catalog:

I called in the revised answer 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe Cabriolet. Hope we win.
