I whacked one earlier on the side of my palm....What a mess!...It must have been full of blood.

John...Do you guys not get 'Fire Ants' aswell? From what I seen, they are real nasty.
Give this a try It works great

In a spray bottle mix 1:1 water and Listerine mouth wash I have even used cheep stuff as long as it is minty.

Spray grass and ground all around the area you will be in.

I was amazed how well it works and cheep too.

Even if you've never been, can't you get in touch with them via computer?

I think they would be happy to hear from you

We do get scorpions here aswell, but european or mediteranean scorpions are small. They are not deadly, but the sting is sore.

Brown Recluse bites are very rarely fatal, those with compromised immune systems are usually the ones that get the worst symptoms. The big thing with Brown Rec bites is skin necrosis, your skin rots away in the area of the bite and again this is also rare and often misdiagnosed. Black Widows will kill you faster then these guys would.

When I was deployed to Iraq, everyone warned me about the Camel Spider, saying that it will inject a numbing agent into your skin and then proceed to snack on you. They also said that they get as big as 2 feet or bigger. I saw plenty of them over there....none bigger then the palm of my hand and they tend to not prey on anything bigger then they are. and they don't chase you....they chase your shadow.

I was definitely into bugs as a kid and they still grab my curiosity!

Listerene mint.....I'll give it a go. I'll let you know how it goes.

Another good tip for mosquitos. If you have a lot of plants around your garden, and water is in the bottom tray of the plant pot(they love stagnant water for laying eggs),put a small piece of copper wire in the water. That stops them.

What about scorpions? There was a whole documentary about this, with interviews from an army medical officer, who was in Iraq.

Possibly it's the funnel web spider that is more dangerous? Spider bites are quite unique. People who have been bitten by these nasty ones, say they can still feel where they were bitten, years after and is quite painfull.
There are black widow(related) here, but you never see them. You'd have to go looking for them.Possibly around old ruins.
House spiders,on the other hand are my freind. I don't kill them. They do a good job eating other insects.

Re: These guys are killing me!

Scorpions on the other hand will mess you up over there and can kill you if there's no quick interventions. Worst case is that you would be hating every aspect of life for several days. The medical officer would be spot on with this one, the Camel Spider's rep comes from the Urban Legends. If you do manage to peeve one off enough for it to bite you, you'll only suffer from pain as the do have some nasty looking chops and infections if you don't clean the wound good.
We always locked up everything and placed socks or nylons over our boots to keep these guys out as they like dark places.

Yes the Funnel Web spider is nasty, espically the ones found around Sydney Austrailia. You won't have to worry about amputations 'cause you'll be dead in less then an hour without the anti venom. Maybe some of our Aussie members can shed some light on them?

I agree with ya Eddie, I don't kill the spiders in my house either, and I have plenty of them in the basement.

Re: These guys are killing me!

Good idea to put socks in the top of your boots.

I'm sure any aussie's here will verify this.(I seen this on discovery also).

A lot of deaths occur on the road, because of a spider incident. The spider finds it's way into a car. The next day the owner drives and sees it crawling on him, causing him to swerve and have an accident. And in almost all cases the spider was harmless. Whereas the small, but poisinous ones are nasty if they get into your slippers in the morning. So either put the sock,or give a good tap on the floor.

I'll tell you what I find incredible. I've seen on the internet, highly dangerous species of animal for sale...! Baby 'Black Mambas'...! I can understand the medical profession taking venom for treating victims, but for enthusiasts? Must be some kind of status symbol? Not much good if it bites you. Even professional snake handlers get bitten, and some with years of experience have died. I'll stick to detailing.

Re: These guys are killing me!

I don't like spiders. They freak me out. I was at work last Friday in the wash bay at the dealership, and I felt these bug legs on my neck. So, naturally I knocked it off. But when I checked to see what kind of bug it was, it was a Black Widow spider! Needless to say, I was not cool with that. I killed it, of course. I'm just glad it didn't bite me. I don't know where it came from, it was just there.

Re: These guys are killing me!

I've been bitten by a spider before, never stung by a bee and there are no aggressive ants in Brooklyn. I get massacred by mosquitos every time I detail a car. My legs look horrible. I scratch them really bad so they sometimes scar.

Try putting a cloth type fabric softener in your pant/short pocket .

                            Thanks dope92cc and shyneman....

Went to the supermarket before i started. Listerene was the dearest by a long shot. The others didn't have mint. So I bought the Listerene. I don't care though. As long as it keeps those things away! It's a nice smell too.

Worked well. Sprayed my arms and legs, ankles aswell as the surrounding area. I think I got 1 or 2 bites, but still, better than 10+ every couple of hours.

Lucky you got it,before it got you! Otherwise you might not have detailed again.

Normaly, widows are shy and you would have to go looking for them. Maybe just depends on how rampant they are?

Yeah, it was kinda weird. I think the last time I saw one was a couple years back when we found one in our woodpile. I don't even want to know what else might be hiding in there!
