  • Be careful what you post on any forum!

So I was reading something on a forum the other day that really makes sense and I thought I would share it.

It was about posting what modifications you've done to your car and such. People have gotten parts stolen off their car because they post information and or pictures of what they've done to their cars.

People then use those pictures to find out where you live and steal everything. The best defense is to block out your license plate and not to take pictures of your car at your house. Even if you crop it, people that know the area will find out where you live.

Also another thing is to always know who is installing stuff on to your car and never give them too much information. If you give them your address they can sell that information to somebody and tell that person exactly how they installed something so the robber can quickly take it off. Installers need nothing more than your first name and a phone number to call you at. Take your plates with you.

Never put branded stickers on your car, that screams "I have this part installed, come steal it."

I know this sounds like too much but its the truth, people are going to steal from you.

Yes I know I'm guilty of this too and am stopping it.

    Just food for your brain.

Thanks for the heads up Ryan. My home was robbed about 6 months ago, they took everything but my dishes and family photos, and I lived on a very busy street. So I know how it feels, and taking any preventative steps is a must!

Ryan L. is absolutely correct. I myself have seen and heard this kind of things happening to people who regularly post on forums.

Also, when you sell something, do not meet at your own place. Meet at the mall or something.

Agreed- I know of 2 people that have had similar situations occur. I gave up posting mods to my Mustangs online, everyone knows what most everyone has, it's not like it will impress anyone anymore.

Around here however- stickers seem to mean what you wish you had installed on your car...

And I totally agree with the invisible- I never had people come to my house when selling cars, or anything. They don't need to know. I've also been lucky that the cars I've sold were titled to previous addresses when I had moved during ownership. I'm a little paranoid I guess...

I would also be careful what you say at car shows and other car events. If you give people the impression that your car is really nice or spends a lot of time on the street they may see it as an opportunity to try something.

My car has no expensive parts installed and does not have a lot of value so I'm not too worried, my real concern is some jealous jerk may key or otherwise vandalize my car because it is old/fancy looking/well kept.

They can probably see both of those things through the window.

The stickers thing isn't the main point, it's just one more thing that clues in thiefs.

Another thing I read was to hide your alarm's indicator light. Even though a lot of thiefs can disable alarms, if you hide your light saying its alarmed hopefully they'll be caught off guard.

Please pass this information along to everybody and lets hear what else you've seen on other forums.

As terrible as it sounds, I agree with the OP. There are regular people who just live life humble, and then there are folks who take advantage of it. I've had my garage broken into and stuff was stolen. Sometimes I feel like buying an AK-47 and just wave it at people in my garage. I'm just joking, but thieves really annoy me.

Detailers clean places nobody see. Detailer see's things nobody else see. But if you ask a Detailer to see how a dress looks on a woman, they are blind.
