Re: Radar Detectors?
Originally posted by 3Fitty View PostOh, one last thing I forgot to mention for all the speed lovers. Having lived in the northeast for a long time, I did a bit of research on the whole speeding ticket thing and I'll give you some law in NY State and NJ.
State Trooper in NY sees a guy in I-87 (south of Albany), driving really fast (northbound). He's on an over pass and radios ahead to another trooper up the road and tells him this guy is bombing down the road. First cop estimates his speed to be 100mph in a 65mph zone. They guy's got a detector and before cop #2 can "tag" him with the gun, the guy slows down to about 70mph. Cop 2 pulls him over and copy 1 joins the scene and gives him a ticket for 100mph.
Guy fights the tickets. Cops admit they didn't "clock" him on the gun but that cop one was able to "estimate his speed based on his experience and the speed of the other cars".
Guy loses, cop wins. Ticket stands.
Guy appeals to the Appellate Division (3rd Department).
Guy loses.
Guy appeals to the Court of Appeals (highest Court in NY State). Guy loses.
Law in NY and NJ - Cop doesn't have to "clock you" or "pace you". All they have to do is "see you" and make a "judgment" on your speed. Like it or not, it's the law (in at least those two States).
Part of "radar training" is to estimate vehicle speeds without radar or laser and having to be within +/-5mph of the target speed. these tests are confirmned with an instructor doing a laser or radar check. before an officer can write that ticket, they have to estimat the target speed, hear the doppler tone(consistant with speed/anolomies) THEN look at the number displayed...
a little more to it than point and shoot

Simply put, I was about to write you a 10 page argument against your reply about speeding but decided to resist it and just post that image.

No more pesky radar just point and shoot.
Or buy a C-4 and up Corvette. Read about in Corvette from the the Inside Pg.112
The Radiator is tilted back at 15 degrees for a lower Radar cross section. Most cars get picked up at 3,000 ft the Corvette gets picked up at 1,500 ft. Lockeed did the wind tunnel test. And as you know they made this crazy thing.

The same applies to an '05 or '06 GTO with the fiberglass hood. I have tested this myself with mutliple runs against a Stalker Dual SL Ka band radar. A typical mid-sized sedan can be clocked at about 1500 ft. Trucks and SUVs can be clocked at one mile plus with the same radar. Radar signature varies a lot from vehicle to vehicle.

I've tried them all. IMHO the best dash mount radar detectors are the V1 and the BEL STi. The 8500 and X50 are pretty good too. Some Escort owners actually prefer the older 8500 and believe it is more sensitive than the newer X50. The best remotes are the 9500ci and the BEL STI-R.
Buy the best RD you can afford. Some of the less expensive BEL models like the 955and 955 will give you decent protection. But PLEASE stay away from the Cobras. In addition to poor radar detection they emit local oscillator signals that cause false alarms in other RDs.
The cheaper RDs will really struggle with Ka band, which is tough enough to pick up for any RD, especially around curves and over hills. You want high sensitivity to pick up instant on hits directed at traffic ahead of you. A lot of police run the radar in instant on mode they don't leave their radars on all the time.
Staying within 5 MPH of the speed limit is no guarantee against a ticket where I live. I know people who were ticketed for only 5 over. So YMMV.

Re: Radar Detectors?
I think we should preface this thread by saying that again you have to be smart. I personally hate to see people on other forums whine about getting pulled over for their 0% tint, or not having a front plate in a state that requires them. When you do these acts, you should almost expect to get pulled over, even at the speed limit.
That being said, I am one of those that will go in that 76-79 range in a 70 zone. One poster said speed kills, it probably does, I won't argue that, but what about cell phones or texting while driving. They probably do too.
I guess all I'm trying to say is you must be so attentive, not only when speeding, but when DRIVING at any speed. Even on a long trip, I could tell you what mile marker I just went by, or if the concrete barrier needs replacing or if the construction crew working has set up their worksite correctly. Everyone doesn't need to pay that much detail to the road, but sometimes, I wish they did."Difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week." Jay-Z
