Anyone have those things? How do they work? Any recommendations on what type to get if I were to get one?

    Re: Radar Detectors?

    Get an Escort.

I've got the 9500ix, that thing is the best I've ever used, read about, and seen.

On my way to work and other places, it only alerts me for real radars, no false alarms. I love it.

It auto adjusts the brightness of the display, also adjusts the audio if you have music playing or it is louder, the database subscription keeps the GPS up to date on camera locations, which is great because those cameras don't use radar, they're pressure sensitive.

I can't think of anything bad about this unit. The thought put into anything is what attracts me to it.

Haven't used one since 2003. You don't need one if you follow one simple rule IF you are going to speed: Find a guy that is going faster than you and follow him/her so that if there is a cop, that person will get collared first, not you. This works on the highway, not back road single lane driving.

No radar detector is going to help if no one else is on the road. You are only drawing attention to yourself.

        Re: Radar Detectors?

That's not always true... I was leading a pack of people speeding on a highway one time lol

Cop saw me but I was too late, he turned on his lights and turned onto the highway. The 3 people behind me scattered and took the exit ramp right up.

He went down the exit ramp and pulled them over, I just slowed down and kept driving haha

Radar detectors help if you're just slightly pushing the limit.

II you're doing 100 in the carpool lane during rush hour, you'll stand out there too.

HOWEVER, in the above example, the radar may go off and you can slow back down to speed before they see you. Possibly...

That's a horrible rule to follow, at least where I live. 99% of the time LEOs will wait to see if there are other idiots racing behind the guy who's going fast to begin with, and nail them... detectors will help in many situations (I've yet to buy one in just under 10 years driving, but have driven with many friends who have them, usually V1, and they definitely work) but you have to accept the fact that you might end up ticketed before you decide to speed... it's that simple.

That said, I'd recommend the V1 as I've seen it work great many many times. That's what I'll be getting fairly soon.

            Re: Radar Detectors?

Oh, and how do they work?

Cops will typically tell you they don't work, because by the time they have their radar gun pointed at you, and you get the radar signal, they get the radio signal back right as the radar activates. While that is true to some extent, the radar does go off before the cop gets the signal.

But that's not the point. My Escort has such great sensitivity that it's gone off where cops were at least 1 mile away, if not further. Radar signals bounce off of everything, so you can get notified before it's actually directly on you.

For example, a curve in the road with buildings around, the radar signal will bounce off the buildings and notify you before you're even in sight of the cop.

The unit I mentioned is the top of the line, it's pretty expensive but compared to the cost of some tickets it's worth it. I got mine as a gift though but the girl who got it for me put a LOT of research into things.

Also as the above poster mentioned, you should always accept the fact that if you get a ticket it's your fault. I do stupid things sometimes but I always accept responsibility for my actions (Got tickets, burnt my clear coat... let water etchings get into my new painted hood... ugh )

Escort 9500ix costs $500... That's enough money for me to buy a nitrous kit so I can outrun cops hahaha, anything cheaper?

I had an interest in the past.I've never owned one to date.In the past 20 years I've had two speeding tickets.I know freinds who have them and have more speeding tickets than me.I speed most of the time.I never really look at what speed I'm doing unless I know there's a speed trap.

What use are they for unmarked cars?

Evaluate the cost of the detector and how many tickets you'd possibly get.Is it worth it?

Well, you get what you pay for. lol

If I were you and I had a budget but really wanted a radar detector, then find out how much an average speed ticket costs, and buy one worth that much.

Look at it as if you got a speeding ticket but instead the money went into an investment.

I have an Escort Passport 8500 and love it! The newer 9500 is supposed to be even better and if so, it would be outstanding!

A buddy of mine that goes under RamAirV1 that posts on here knows more about radar detectors than anyone I have come across. Hopefully he will chime in. I believe he is even testing a super high end Bel right now, but uses Valentine One. I think...

                            Yeah...RamAirV1 loves his too.

Do you have one yourself? How do you like the indicators?

                              Re: Radar Detectors?

It was pointed out to me several years ago when I went to Missouris' police academy. The people who put out the radar detectors are the same ones that are making the radars for the police. So as soon as you buy the newest version of radar detectors, the companies have already put out something newer for the police, or soon after, they put out the latest radar detector. Best advice from a former police officer, drive within 5mph. of the posted speed limit and then you can save your money on speeding tickets, and a radar detector that will be outdated within a few months, if you are lucky, a year maybe two.
