    Rgcurtis, I used to be like that until I saw the proverbial poo hit the fan. Now I don't care who you are or what uniform you put on, Ifyou fight with me for this country....your my brother....or sister! .....
    .....BTW.....GO ARMY!! lol, j/k

    Akimel, You fathered two great men who chose to join, you obviously brought them up good and even though you may be embarrassed about not wanting to join, you still made a HUGE sacrifice with your sons, you're as good as a fellow vet in my book!
    You say your oldest son is a tanker? Do you think he can score some black tanker boots for me? I miss those bad boy's from my days on a tank!

        Yes, he was a gunner and driver of an M1 Abrams. He served his four years, and is now finishing up undergraduate school. I'm afraid you're on your own with the boots.

                LOL!!! Although I will tend to agree the COB does, it is a complete team effort when you are several hundred feet below the water.

                    Life imitating art - from the movie Crimson Tide where the boat's officers are discussing submarine movie trivia. What submarine movie do you consider to be the most realistic depiction of submarine duty and protocol? Working at the Naval Air Station North Island base in San Diego, I routinelycome across a few submariners from the Point Loma Submarine base, and I've talked with a few from Bremerton over the phone. The impression I got from the 2 or 3 boaters I've discussed this topic with is that Crimson Tide mostly got the protocols and culture right, but the scenario was total Tom Clancy fiction. Red October was a concensus laugher, and Das Boot is still the landmark for getting the claustrophobic feel right. What do you think, RG?

                      WOW???? What a hard question.....let's see:
                      Realism = K19 & Das Boot
                      Laugher = Crimson Tide (too much hollywood for me)
                      Protocol = Hunt for Red October/ Down Periscope

                      I could talk about this for a very long time. I actually prefer, run silent run deep, gray lady down, operation petty coat. Some realism and humor. Just my opinion.

                        LOL. The one scene in Crimson Tide that made me smirk was when one of the SONAR ops asked why they had to create a certain distance before arming the torpedo. I know that was a plot device intended to explain the reasoning to the audience, but I also thought that there was no way this guy would be serving on a submarine if he didn't know that.

                        Red October - I loved all of the chrome in the Russian sub, but I like to detail so maybe that's why.

                        I first saw Das Boot in the early 80's when it was first released. At the time I was studying German as a college course so I saw the movie in it's original German dialogue. One of the best war themed movies ever filmed, IMO.

                          I have no knowledge whatsoever about submarines, but I have seen a bunch of submarine movies. As movies, my two favorites iare Run Silent, Run Deep, with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster, and The Enemy Below, with Robert Mitchum and Kurd Jurgens. I imagine, though, that they get low marks from real submariners.
