Sorry to hear about your mother. I really hope everything works out and she stays in your life much longer than anyone expects. I'm terrible with these situations as well. Quite often I think about what I would do if I lost either of my parents. It's really tough. Again, I hope for the very best!

I am not a strong person, especially when it comes to things like this. And you guys are not a bunch of strangers, I feel like I know some of you better than people that are here in my town.

I'm so sorry to hear of hers and your father's illness, Nick. Our hearts and prayers go out to them, to you and your families in this difficult time. I'm sure you have many friends here that you could call if you need to talk. We are here for you.

Well, just an update. My mom is being taken in for surgery on Monday June 8th. They will be removing her left lung

How do they remove an entire lung, and still keep a fuctional life?

It is more than possible, Nick, for an individual with one lung to live well. It will take time for her body to heal and adjust. She may want to give up running any more marathons, though.

Do not give up hope. Medicine has made great strides dealing with cancer in recent years.

Nick I am sorry to hear about the news. I have been the opposite of you, I have los so many members of my family. All I know is it never gets easier but remember they are in a much better place and have nomore problems to deal with.

Sorry to hear that Nick. It is common for doctors to take a lung out, just like taking out a kidney, breasts, even portions of your liver, sometimes it's just amazing what the human body can endure. Quality of life won't be all that great but I think it would probably be better then what she is going thru now.
Were you able to get her down to Dallas? How is she taking all of this?
Keep us up to date and tell her we all give her best wishes for a speedy recovery!

She won't do Dallas or Houston. She's found a good Dr in Tulsa, which is about an hour and a half from their house. She trusts him, and I guess thats whats important. She's been a nervous wreck(for good reason) for the last couple of weeks. The surgeon has relieved her a bit, and she is starting to calm down now. It's been a rough time around here, lots of stuff crashing around our lives

Nick, I'm just getting caught up on my MOL posts and came across this one...you have my heartfelt compassion when it comes to dealing with this...I am 51 and lost my dad when I was 15...my mom was blessed enough to find another man who treated her like a queen and remarried...he died of prostate cancer 10 years after they married...my mom, God bless her is still going strong at 89..so I guess I'm saying that I've been through what you're going through as have so many others...your mom will be in my prayers...life is funny sometimes - - - my 18 year old son made a comment to me the other night, he said, "Dad, you know, we come into this world with nothing and we leave it with nothing...what we do while we're here, that's what matters"...pretty cool coming from a teenager...and he's got a point...spend as much time with her as you can now...you'll both benefit from that...good luck....
