It's definitely tough out there and it seems it's only getting worse. For those of us that have jobs right now let's appreciate it and for those that don't I truly hope things get better. It's a bit tough where I work right now. I use to handle the Countrywide account and we lost that, Circuit City was another of our major accounts and well they went under, Washington Mutual is now owned by Chase so let's see where that goes for us. Detailing helps me out and I'll be doing that for a while no matter what.

I was worried about getting another job this summer, but now I'm beginning to look for jobs after I finish up the business degree in two years...

Agreed, Just look at history. As for my job, I havent been layed off but they have let some people go and cut hours even though we still have the same ammount of business before.
My dad works for a company which build machines which produce bottles and they are actually doing better than before.

I remember reading through a newspaper article however saying that people are keeping their cars longer which means good things for us detailers.

I certainly feel for anyone who has been adversly affected by any of the downturn.

However, I think this should be a call to everyone in general (not anyone in particular, but just all people in general) to get their financial situations in order. Many financial advisors always advise having about a 3-6 month fund of all of your expenses if a job loss or something else bad would happen that you wouldn't be able to work.

I also think that as Americans in general, we live beyond our means way too much and too often. Even something simple like a cell phone plan, it's like do we really need texts and data plans and email at your fingertips and such. I spend $45 a month on a basic plan that I never get close to my minute limits and I don't text or use the internet.

I just think companies often pedal things we don't need, but if say the Joneses down the street have it, we have to have it. It's all just sicking the way things are shoved down our throats these days as well.

I will end this mini-rant and again, I mean this in general terms.

I have 3 jobs, 2 as an EMT and also an Army Reservist. There's a high demand for EMTs and Medics but there is also a high burnout rate since the pay isn't the best and most folks have more then 1 or 2 jobs. I think I'm fine where I'm at but in this world you never know, If I were to loose these jobs I'd probably go back active duty since I would only have 8 years till retirement.....I never thought I would say that!
Deployments **** but it pays the bills and keeps a roof over my families heads!

My father just got laid off from an aluminium factory where he spent 34 years under 3 companies......34 years and not a chance to retire......34 years and all he got was a pink slip.....sad just sad. Hopefully we can turn this around before the country falls apart.

One thing I notice about the big media outlets is if it's good news, it's not news. Misery sells and people in genral want more of it.

I agree with you. We have a savings and no debt outside the house. We worked hard to get that way.
We have always bargained shopped, it is the only way. I like Dave Ramsey, he has a lot of good advice.
I just am concerned about the future.

I guess I am very fortunate right now, being an appraiser.

If I work on the appraisal district side, (~public~) as long as there are houses standing, there is work.

If I work on the Fee Appraisal side (private) there will be work. When the times are good and people are buying houses, an appraisal is needed. When times are bad and houses get foreclosed on, an appraisal is needed.

I work for a Chrysler dealership, and we have not been selling many new cars.

Used cars, on the other hand, are flying off the lot.

For instance, we have 2008 Dodge Calibers with 18,000 miles for $9950

The auctions have so many cars, they are selling them as "lots" for low prices, and the dealer passes the savings on to the customer.

I actually just started listening to Dave, but I can only get his show on the weekends. I haven't done his program or anything, but it is inspirational just listening. I probably have to blame him for me recent push to pay-off my student loans. Other than that I am pretty much debt free (but I don't own a house, so that's the next step, eventually).

I have 9 years at my current place of work. The first 2 as a nuclear security guard and the last 7 as a nuclear security supervisor. I am very blessed to have this job considering the current state of our economy. My department is required to be onsite 24/7 as per NRC(nuclear regulatory commission). Yes I work at a Nuke power plant and NO I do not glow in the dark.LOL

I work in the kitchen of a relatively large and generally busy restaurant. While its not the best paying, we are keeping business and doing well. So I feel that it is secure and the fact that last month I was given a promotion and a raise helps too. haha
With that said, up until the end of January, I use to work two jobs. The other was warehouse manager at a furniture store. It went out of business and closed.. which basically sucked..
