I feel your pain. Two months ago, I took my car into a paint and body shop for bumper cover repair. I specifically requested no complimentary wash. When I went back to pick up my car a few days later, I witnessed a shop gofer furiously wiping down my car with a dry, dirty chamois. Worse than swirl city. Try severe scratch city. The service manager suddenly remembered my request and said "Oh yeah, you didn't want a wash, did you?"
I replied, "What wash? It looks like your guy decided to rub shop dust off my car with a chamois." I start pointing out horrifying scratches all over the car, especially on the hood. The service manager calls over the gofer who rubbed my car down and asked him how he washed my car. The guy relies, "Oh, I just gave it a dry wash. I ran a wet cloth over it and dried it with a chamois"

So I had my car professionally detailed (high speed polished) to repair the damage. Insurance covered most of it under a comprehensive claim, and the paint and body shop paid my deductible. But what else can you do? Tape a reminder note to the inside of the windshield? But the upshot was I found a great community of car geeks on MOL

EDIT: I had posted a before and after pic but removed them. Didn't want to hijack the thread.
