      Re: Dslr...

If anyone is considering a similar camera but cannot justify the expense of the 450D, you should have a look at the 1000D. It's the same exact body with many of the same features, a 10.1 megapixel sensor, and a much lower pricetag (especially with all of the special deals being offered on it). I've seen it being sold for as low as $439.99 with a kit lens ($351.99 USD).

Canon has announced the EOS 1000D, a new entry-level DSLR that slots into the model lineup beneath the 450D. The 10 megapixel digital camera, known as the Digital Rebel XS in the US, takes many of the new features of its big brother and presents them in a lighter, less expensive format that Canon hopes will re-shape the market in the same way as the first Rebel (300D) did. No word yet from Canon US about their intentions.

Congratulations. DSLRs are so much more fun than point-and-shoots. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. If you're serious about photography, I recommend reading Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Enjoy!

I wish I could put myself past the price to get a really good camera. Guess I'm just cheap?

not bad for my first pic with a SLR, no editiing other than size.

Great picture Rasky! I'm learning too but I find shooting in 'P' mode is a great way to start learning to control one aspect of photographer rather than jumping into full manual.

Then you can start playing with some neat things like light boxes. Here is my semi-recent attempt (name those detailing items for 10 points ;-):

Rasky you are on the right track. Photo looks great! Congratulation on the new toy!

Nice little light box Dan! I've been meaning to make one. I grabbed some vellum from work to use for the side panels. Wonder how that will work compared to the regular paper. We also have 36" wide x 500' rolls of plain white paper so it's nice I can do it with out seams.

Rasky, Congratulations on the new toy.... I know you will enjoy it.
It looks like you already know about dpreview (which I would recommend) and getting lots of good suggestions however, I will second HealthyCivic’s suggestion on the book as well as The Digital Photography Book.

Take lots and lots of pictures and have fun.

Oh..... let people know how great books are for stocking stuffers.
