Re: I am looking at buying a 1990 Ford Taurus SHO

Finally I got it started. It took forever to start it. That costco battery does not like to charge up. We jumped it with a Explorer from the same year that also has 300,000 miles on it. My friends dad get a lot of miles out of their cars. It drove nice the steering wheel stayed nice and stright does not shake and it is not spuddering on acceleration. The water temp stayed normal. The clutch is nice but it leaks oil onto the exhaust which then it smells. If it checks out when I put it up on a lift and passes smog I am going to buy it. The timing belt like I said earlier was most likely changed along with the water pump. The brakes were locked up then they finally broke loose after backing it up from its resting place. My brother is complaining it is a Taurus but he wants a beamer for his first car but I told him this is a cool car. I also told him parts for this car are going to be way less in price than any BMW.

Very true. Old BMWs are NOT wallet friendly by any stretch of the imagination. That SHO should have a lot of aftermarket and OEM support, and cheap. If he does it right it should make for a nice sleeper, too.

You don't want a 20-yr-old Bimmer for a first car. Way too expensive to fix every month or two.

I know I told my brother that but he does not believe me. And also the RPM Tach was acting up. We tried starting it on a battery charger a couple of times we waited a 30 min to a hour before we try to start it every time. when we tried, one of the last times the car was clicking meaning it had some power but the gauge climbed all the way past red line and up around till it hit the back side of the little needle holder thing that the needle rests on when it is not running. what happened and what can be done to fix it. I was think of reseting the computer and see what it would do.

Sounds like a classic symptom from a dead battery. The gauges usually max out and go crazy when the battery is toast.

Can i reset them? or did the battery get a power surge and broke them? I could probably take out the gauge and manually reset it if I have to.

They should be fine once you get a good battery in there. If a new battery doesn't fix it, you might need an alternator? At that point you may want to walk from the car as it may have more problems then they want to tell you, or realize.

It has a new alternator but they are not going to hide secrets from me I hope. I am going to check it at a my auto shop and put it up ona lift and plug a scanner in it to read all the data ect. Thanks Mark. I am thinking of putting my thunderbirds battery in it and test it to see if it fixes the problem. The Birds battery is only 7 months old.

                  Thanks Mark.

The paint is not in that bad of shape either. it has surface rust but in places that are not noticlable like when you open thehood on the inner edge there is rust and in the door jams but other tha that it is in good condition. The paint is SS paint so it should Buff out nicley. the paint has so much dead SS paint it is coming off like white powder in some spots. I can post pics I will take pics when it is in the shop and on the lift.

                      Thanks guys.

Re. the mold- go to a marine shop, they should have a few different products to remove mold, most are a spray and wipe style. One of the ones I have had the best results with (and boats get REAL moldy when stored outside in a Vancouver winter) is made by 3M, just be sure to spot test, because it says it can affect colour, though I've never had any problems. Marine and auto interior materials are probably a little differnet though.

Good luck with the purchase, for 600, I'd do it. If it all goes wrong, you could probably sell parts off of it to SHO guys on e-bay, and cover your costs !!

Are the marine mold removal products made for vinyl or cloth though (or both)? You may just have to gut the interior (which I'd do anyways) and work at it. I'm sure there are "treasures" in there, lol! I can always try and drive on down and help ya out too. We still haven't been able to meet up, lol!!

I've used them on both vinyl and marine carpet, not a lot of cloth in boat interiors, so don't know there. Taking out the seats at least would be a good idea though- mold gets EVERYWHERE.

I have more info on the vehicle once again, I guess they kept the car insured but did not keep up on registration so I am going to DMV on Monday and find out the cost in fees there will be. if it is a lot I am going to have to pass on the car or I can get a non op form for it and hopfully if all goes well it should be fine. The other issues is the exhaust will fall off if we drive it to far, welds broke, what can I rig up for the exhaust to make the car do a 15 mile drive. other than that everyhting else is fine. Should get a temproary sticker so it will be legal for the road for a month?
Yeah and Tyler that would be fun man, yeah we have not been able to meet up, maybe if you want to you can come on down. On the side I went to my friends house who has the SHO and they have cats and well I come out to go home and ther are cat prints all over my Mach with cat feet scratches in the paint.
