  • My T Bird broke down today but all is good.

Well The Bird has been sitting for a long time and I wanted to drive it even though it has 20 different colors on it. I drove it to work and it started strong but when I was leaving work for home it was sputtering when I hit the gas so I went and bought 7 gallons of gas 91 octane. So I have plenty of fuel. I check the temp guage it was in the normal range but a little hot but all was good temp wise. I was coasting downa hill and it sputtered and quit running my oil pressure light and gen light came on right when it died so I know it was not running. The oil level is good so I m not wooried about my motor really that bad. I think it vapor locked because i was coasting down a hill not much fuel is flowing and the motor was a little hot but normal so I think the fuel was vaporizing before it could reach the intake manifold. Any ideas on what might have happened. I did get it started finally it wanted to die but i kept my foot on the gas to keep the fuel flowing. I slammed it into gear and made it home. I am thankful for the nice lady who helped me push it out of the street because this car is very heavy. What I did to get it started was that I kept cranking it and cranking it until it sputtered and i blipped the throttle and it fired up so I have no idea what happened other than a vapor lock problem. Now that this has happened I am going to replace my fuel pump just in case.
So any ideas what went wrong? The car when I opened the hood smelled like raw fuel, but I checked for leaks in the fuel line but nothing.

I suspect the fuel pump, but with a strong smell of gas may turn up a carb problem.

Out of curiosity, is the engine specially built or tuned for 91?

check the fuel pump, then check the carbs; does it skip when you're cruising

The car is built to run on 91 octane. But I do add Marvels mystery oil as a lead additive because these old cars ran on lead fuel. The carb is brand new. Brand new Holley 600CFM. Motor is stock 65,000 original miles. I am going to be pulling my air filter off and check the carb more than I did yesterday. The fuel pump is easy to get to. It is mounted next the oild filter on the block. I think the pump costs like 150 dollars so I am going to put a new one on or rebuild the original one. When it was idleing it did not sound healthy but that was before I put gas in it I think it was almost out of gas my fuel gauge does not work so I have to go on my mileage. After I put gas in it ran strong.
          Thanks guys

haha, welcome to the club, if the fuel guage on my 84 CJ-7 reads at all, if it says half full, you should be coasting into a gas station...and then hope the stupid clamps for the fuel filter dont come loose, becuase unless you're like a contortionist with really small arms, you have to be lucky to tighten the clamp back down

So I went out and started it up today and it started on the first crank. Ran strong. Until I shut the choke off then it was barely able to idle and sputtering but when i added throttle it was fine. I took the air filter off and I found that there was two air filter gaskets on and one was out of shape and I took it off and I started my car up and it ran rine. it was able to keep a stable idle. I am going to keep an eye on it.
