  • Almost got a client...

Well, MOL member bookeem doesn't even know this but I almost got him a client last night (he lives pretty close to me and this is pretty interesting story).

So, last night I get home from work at about 7 (which is about the earliest I've been home in about 2 weeks) and I decide to "un-wind" by looking at products at autozone and pepboys (yes, I know it is weird that just looking is mildly therapeutic).

In any event... I finish at autozone and I drive up Rt. 20 North and stop in at Pepboys. As I'm approaching the car product area I notice this ENORMOUS guy with about 11 different products in his hand. He has NO idea what he's doing and he's asking a 16 year old looking Pepboys employee (that looks like he just wants to go home) what he needs to do to fix his suv (white Yukon - I think - older model).

SUV had an area repainted that was very rough. Not a bad paint job, just not very smooth (I'm guessing over spray).

So the kid is just basically looking at thing on the shelf and putting them in this guys hands along with a "toy" six inch orbital as a way of fixing his issues. In comes "the all knowledgeable" 3Fitty.

After talking with el enormo (must've been 6'7" and 300lbs), we decided to go outside and look at his truck. Thankful that he did not eat me, I proceeded to give him advice. He seemed confounded by what I was telling him.

Finally I said to him... "I know this guy in Passaic NJ who is a great detailer and he'll make your car look like new" (I was thinking bookeem - because I don't ever want to do this for money - because then it becomes a job and I want a hobby). In any event, I thought I had clinched the deal for bookeem, but he said, "well I was thinking about it, but some guy wanted $110".

I was like... "THAT'S IT"???? For that monster and all the work it would need!!! This thing was in REALLY bad shape. Although I had NO idea what bookeem might charge, I can't imagine ANYONE doing a REAL correction on this truck for $110 (it needed a lot of help).

In any event... here's what he ended up getting and the advice I gave him...

    NXT wash.

Meg's Clay Kit x 2 (just in case)

DC paint cleaner (no colorX at the store).

ScratchX (to use on areas that might be a bit more problematic).

    NXT 2.0

    New cotton terry applicator pads

    Some MF's

    Wash mitt

    Chamois

Hey Meg's, do I get commission? LOL Sorry I couldn't close the deal for you bookeem!

    Re: Almost got a client...

hey no problem man, i really appreciate u even trying to send him my way...

on that same note, im having a hard time closing deals myself with a lot of new inquires ive had, everyone is thinking its a cheap and easy job, and i no where near charge as much as others here or/and i hate to see peole get ripped off by some of the so called detail shops in my town/area..

i had a guy with a black 2003 honda civic 4 door, swirled to death with light oxidation on the hood and roof, he wanted it looking good as my car as his words were, plus an interior detailing, shampoo the whole 9, i told him 350.00 for it all, he almost fainted, i kinda laughed it off, gave him my card and said , call me if u change your mind..

now, being that its incredibly slow for me right now, and just so i can have a car to detail, ive been giving away details so to say..

1 cause i can always use the extra cash, and 2 just to get my work out there even more , free advertising, lol..

but man its been hard to close deals/appointments lately...its deppressing honestly, as i need to do what i love to do, and theres but so much i can detail on my and the misses car, lol

3fitty, again i thank u for even thinking of me...and the pep boys on 20 is like 5 minutes from me, lol...

what autozone were u at? clifton on lakeview?

Nice looking out for a fellow member,3Fitty. I detail primarily as a stress reliever and on occasion for profit (a select group of clients). I do have friends that are professional detailers and they, like "bookeem" are felling the pinch. There seems to be alot of belt tightening due to the slowdown in the economy and detailers are feeling the effects.

yeah i agree and i do not consider my self a pro, like most the guys on here..

i only do it part time, after my 8 hours in the office(thats my full time) and weekends..but got into it cause it was a passion, thrn had people wanting me to do there cars, and from there starting a lil mobile side gig..

if i could make it detailing full time, i"ll be in heaven doing what i love...

but even part time, im feeling the hit, as sometimes i tha extra cash is really needed..

I almost fell of my chair reading 3fittys story... Good man indeed.

Yeah - I got the same faces when I told customers that comes to me and asked for a quote... Issue here, the people that came to me wanted the el cheapo wash n wax with any otc products... they dont really want complete crystal clear reflection, they wanted only a smooth paint surface and gloss....I almost got a customer sending his brand new merk but he wanted an all swissvax treatment..

Yup, the one on lakeview. Listen... if I ever come across anyone looking for a pro-job, I'll send them your way. Heck, I'd have you do my cars if I didn't LOVE doing it myself.

I was actually shocked at how cheap he expected detailing to be. $110 for a HUGE Yukon??? That's nuts. I mean, I'm not pro, but I was talking to my wife about it and was thinking it should be at least $300.

                    Re: Almost got a client...

Actually, if you ever get REALLY busy and need a hand (and wifey lets me out for a couple of hours)... I'll offer you my services (free).

This forum actually has some real top notch members, like all the dudes that sent me stuff for my wax test or when I went in on a big MF towel purchase with another member and got some amazing MF towels at great price (because of the bulk purchase).

I've seen bookeem's work, it looks amazing, so I hope in the future I can send some business his way.

Man today is a good day to come into work, and read post like these..

All i can say is thanks and its really appreciated, from the kind words to the free offer if im ever that busy, but i never expect anything for free and will never let u help me out if need be for free..

i wouldnt say my work is amazing, compared to what i see here on MOL..its just tha burning passion i have for detailing that keeps me at it on a car untill im satisfied, i will hold a customers car hostage at my expense to get it the way i think its capable of looking, and wont charge extra for the time over the time billed for, lol, i just always try to go that extra mile, i dont make a lot of money doing this currently, but figure going that extra mile, is what will lead to my clients never dtraying, always coming back abd refering friends so that it becomes possible for me to make decent cash doing it..

and im always open to suggestions tips, etc to better my business and or myself as a detailer..

                      thank u all..u guys rock..

a friend with a lil nissan sentra, pulled into the back of my complex, gave her a wash, hit it with d151, dressed the tires, cleaned the windows, hour and a half to 2 hours later, 50 bucks in my pocket, lol..i get out at 3 today and have another 89 pickup to wash and wax..i do these lil jobs to keep me active and detailing, but prefer the bigger jobs that take all day...
