  • Open to vehicle suggestions...

Okay, so wifey and I are probably going to be expanding her waistline and our family in the near future, which bring us to an interesting dilema.

My wife has a relatively new (2007) Honda CR-V which is in great condition, but ulimately probably too small (in terms of back seat width).

We alredy have two kids and with a third, putting three child seats in the back of the CR-V is just to tight. I've been looking at possible options (NO, Minivans are not "possible options") and I keep coming back to the
    Acura MDX.

The reason why is because of these factors:

The invoice price on it is about $40k (with the technology package), it has 300hp (AWD) and the most important specs:

Rear Shoulder Room: 61.5 in. Rear Hip Room: 59.1 in

This *appears* to be considerably more WIDTH in the back seats than most everything in its price class or size class. Yes, I know there are bigger vehicles out there, but the MDX is 15/20 mpg (city/hwy) which is still respectable.

Again, I'm open to suggestions... I've been researching everything my mind could come up with, but maybe someone has a favorite mid sized SUV that I have not thought of that compares favorably in size.

Also, the MDX has seating for seven, but I consider the third row seat more of a gimmick than anything else (having sat in them last night) they are purely for elves and dwarfs. (The third row seat do NOT have child seat anchors, so I do NOT consider them options for the child seats).

We have a Nissan Murano, and love it. Not sure on the demensions, but it feels pretty big back there. Plus, the rear seat recline

It's respectable. 58.7 on the rear shoulder and 55.4 on the rear hip. Problem with it, is that it is only 1.1 inch more room than our CR-V, which will probably still have the child seats touching. The extra 3-4 inches in the MDX really makes a difference.

My mom just got a 2008 Toyota Highlander Limited AWD and it's sweet! She gets good mpg and there is a ton of room. I have more room in the back seat than I do in the front seat of my Jeep.

I looked up the specs... it's rated at 17/23 mpg, 270 hp, rear shoulder room 59.5, rear hip room 56.5, rear leg room 38.3. It looks like the specs show a little less room in the back then the MDX but I'm 6'-0" and 180 lbs and have a ton of extra room.

Good luck and congrats on the soon to be new addition to the family. Oh ya, congrats on the kid too. lol

Just saw the specs on the 2009 Honda Pilot. Not sure I like the looks but the specs are good, as is the price.

              Jokeman,

Nice find. Never looked at it.

Bigger than the MDX on both specs, cheaper in price, mileage is close, the only thing I worry about is reliability. What do you think?

I'd say either go Honda or Toyota. It's nice buying something that will not lose half it's value the second you drive it home. Not to mention the reliability and fuel economy.

That's the hook with Honda and Toyota. My family use to be a GM family (strictly) and then we had a really bad run with about 4 consectuve GM cars in the 80's and they lost us as customers (2 Pontiacs, 1 Chevy & 1 Buick).

Since that time, we've only bought Honda's and Toyota's with great luck.

I just HATE being at the dealership for service (whether covered by warranty or not - I hate the time it takes).

                    3fitty,

I am not sure of the spec but check out the subaru b9 tribeca. Since they redesigned the engine it no longer runs on 93 octane just 87. Has all wheel drive, and over 250hp with similar mpg.

I think they have gotten a lot better though. For me it's the depreciation that kills them. I'm still a GM fan but I want the best bang for my buck, and GM is just not it for me.

I will own a Vette some day though....just waiting for my girl to finish law school.

Nice looking SUV! Another one I did not look at, but the specs are just not big enough. It is very similar to my CR-V.

                        Thanks for the suggestion.

How about an Infinity FX? I'm not sure how big those are but I sure do like the style. You wouldn't have to go with the 390 hp FX 50 but the FX 35 is still 303 hp.

Edit: specs... rear shoulder room 57.4, rear hip 54.2

                              3fitty,

no problem. I know you were looking also for reliablity and you could not go wrong with the top 3 auto makers. honda, toyota, subaru. Like I said I did not check specs, i knew it was on the smaller side of the suvs you are thinking of but I did not realize it was about the same as your cr-v wow.
