I'll be darn. You are correct. The kit lens is a 18-55mm with IS.

You throw AA batteries and pocket size out the window but it looks like a very nice camera.

Buy a good cheap tripod if you want to skip the IS. Testing the camera before buying is a very good idea.

The 17-85mm kit is the better lens if you can get it with the camera. Buying separately will increase the price.

After browsing the review I say go for it! lol

You do amazing work and I'd hate to see crappy photos of it.

Amazon has the kit on sale for $709 right now too.

When purchasing a DSLR, look at the quality and selection of lenses available, then look at the camera body. Yes, the body is important, but the lens is much more important.

I use a Nikon D40X with an 18-70mm lens. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't get the D40X, but rather the D40 - the extra pixels are not worth the price. The 18-70mm is really nice for detailing shots. Also macro lenses (60mm or 105mm) really help to showcase the true condition of the paint. I have a 60mm and can't live without it.

Check out slrgear.com. They review all of the current lenses.

On the topic of DSLR's

What about the Canon Rebel XSi? I realize thats quite a bit more than I was originally asking, but I really want a great picture quality.

If I go with something like the XSi, will it be a step up from my Sony H1? A pretty noticable step up?

Alright guys and gals, I need a new camera. I have the Sony H1 right now, and it's a good camera, just a little too bulky.

You've seen the camera I use at Meguiar's Garage and I take a zillion photos every year for use on the forum. I couldn't do the job without the Cannon Digital Rebel.

It's very nice camera for the money and you can fit an entire car in, (profile shot), without having to back up for a mile. I'm on my second one as I wore the first one out.

My suggestion is to get pants with bigger pockets then get the new Cannon Rebel with image stabilization.

You won't regret it... you take a lot of the same types of pictures I take for use on the forum and I couldn't get away with anything less than the Rebel.

I use these tools each and everyday I do my job.

Can always buy a better Canon DSLR and some nice L series lenses.
