  • Need help buying a new camera...

Alright guys and gals, I need a new camera. I have the Sony H1 right now, and it's a good camera, just a little too bulky.

    What I need,

    Point and shoot
Small enough to fit in my pocket
Runs on common batteries(AA or AAA)
Takes killer pictures for the net-I want the clearest pictures I can have from a small point and shoot camera
Easy to figure out and use

I really don't care about brand names, as long as it does it's job, and does it well. I really don't have a specific budget. If it's a good camera, I'm willing to pay what it's worth.

Any help? I'm lost with all of these choices

Look at the Canon line, not sure if they use AA's or not.

When I buy electronics, being the nerd I am, I tend to follow these guys. PC World, they review a lot of stuff.

            Top 10 Point and Shoot

It'll be hard to find a camera that takes AA batteries. We just bought our daughter a Nikon point and shoot S210 Coolpix(rechargeable) and the battery lasts a long time. Our older 5mp AA battery Sony Cyber shot seems to work okay, didn't capture the photos I wanted on the Explorer detail I did. I haven't tried the daughters camera yet. I owned a S7000(I think), advanced point and shoot fujifilm and I loved that camera but obviously not a pocket camera and it croaked and we paid a lot of money for it 5 years ago.

I was told by two different store chain salesman that Nikon and Canon are the best for P&S cameras as thats what they make, cameras. They said the Casio's are okay and the kodaks are okay, and others. I would find a circuit city and make them give you a test run on all cameras, have them take it outside etc.

            Have fun.

My next camera is a Canon Rebel or the bigger models (1500 bucks for just the body is hardcore but I love them!)

opposite though, check the camera you like, check his review and sample pix.

The Canon A line uses AA batteries. I really think rechargeable ones are the way to go. I have a AA charger that works at home or with a car adapter. It works great and the batteries last forever.

I have the canon A640. Takes great pictures and use AA batteries. Just wished it had a flash mount.

But the best point and just shoot camera in terms of picture quality is still going to be a DSLR. Just have to live with the bulk. Some of the new low end DSLR nowadays are quite small...for a DSLR.

IMHO, the best digital camera review site is dpreview.com. If I'm not mistaken they also take pictures of the camera held by hand, so you can estimate the size.

I second this opinion. The wife is always commenting on it was a good idea to get the rechargeable batteries. For our p+s its a kodak.cx7530. It is pocket size. Takes good pics, and is easy to use.

As mentioned above- Canon A540 or 560 will do great

You can also get relatively close and shoot detail shots.

Easy to setup and uses SD cards and AA batteries.

The biggest downside will be battery drain if a flash is used heavily.

I find all the p&S cameras suffer there though.

We have both the Nikon and Canon's - I use a Panasonic at work.

Note that Nikon makes an awesome SLR digital camera but basic P&S Nikon's have really slow processors.

Panasonics are good too if you don't need macro closeups under 12"

                        On the topic of DSLR's

What about the Canon Rebel XSi? I realize thats quite a bit more than I was originally asking, but I really want a great picture quality.

If I go with something like the XSi, will it be a step up from my Sony H1? A pretty noticable step up?

With good lens and good lighting, should be pretty noticeable.

I would recommend going to a local camera store and looking around also. Not a Best Buy but a store where they know cameras. I always go and bring my own memory card, play with the camera inside and out in the parking lot, then take the memory card back home. That way you can see the photos and get a hands on feel for the camera.

If you want a higher end camera and still want to stick with point and shoot check out the Canon Powershot G5 IS. One thing I like about point and shoot is the IS (image stabilization), seems like I can never hold it steady. You can get into IS with DSL's too but the lenses are about $1000.

Edit: The Canon Powershot G9 would be a really nice point and shoot too.
