  • Cut in dash

Over the weekend I discovered a small cut in the dash of my daughter’s car. I’m certain it was courtesy of the knucklehead that did the state inspection last week. He must have poked the dash with his handy razor blade scraper that’s used to remove the old sticker. I don’t think I would get very far going back there and trying to convince them they did it and especially getting them to do anything about it.

So my question is this.... Should I try to fix it or just leave it be? On one hand... if I leave it alone over time it could continue to crack and really deteriorate around the cut. On the other hand... trying to repair it could make it look even worse than the cut itself.

I’m guessing the dash is a slightly padded vinyl of some kind? Anyone know? The car is a 98 Toyota Camry. I was thinking about one of those vinyl repair kits but I’ve never used one or know anybody that has.

    Opinions? Experience? Fixes?

BTW, The cut is about a 1/4 of an inch in length. I couldn't get pics to upload.

Once again, it just goes to show ya........ you can't take your stuff anywhere.................

    Re: Cut in dash

You could check with some vinyl dash repair technicians, they have dyes and chemicals to fill in and try to restore a normal appearance.

If the scratch doesn't go all the way through the dash it might be just as well to leave it alone and deal with it if it ever becomes a problem.

Not too many options, here's one...

Drill two holes at the end of the cut so it won't continue to crack further.

Without going any deeper in an explanation does this sound like something you really want to do?

How about paying to have the dash removed and replaced with a new one? Ugh... money and it's likely to never be right and could get damaged in the process.

Maybe just let it go if it's not too bad as the repair scenarios are really very good.

That's just some guesses without actually seeing the damage so take it for what it's worth.

Yeah, I know my options are going to be limited but, I thought someone might have a idea or two. Like I said, it's only about a 1/4 inch little cut but, I'm afraid it will deteriorate and become unrepairable, within reason of course.

      Thanks for your input.

        Sometimes we're just winging it...

Maybe someone else will have more rosy scenarios!

I think I'd likely try a little clear fingernail polish....least ways from the sound of the snag.

Could always pull the dash, sand it down, bondo the cut and have it painted to match the exterior color of the car but its a lot more work and money. Plus, that would be one more thing for you to polish
If its fast, loud, and runs on a flammable liquid...count me in.
