  • I am absolutely sick of this whole employee thing!

I can not find a decent employee to save my life! In the past 2 years, I've had about 5 people work for me. Everyone of them start out fantastic, then they become so unreliable.

Latest is a guy that I had extremely high hopes for. He had the eye to catch flaws in the paint, and the enthusiasm to want to fix them. Now, he could care less.
He makes excuses why he can't come to work, then complains when his check is small. Telling me that I don't pay enough. He'll come to work, not say a word to me, then tell me he has to leave at noon I have jobs scheduled! He doesn't care.

He tells me that he loves the job, and that I am the coolest boss he's ever had, yet he treats me like poo

I just want to go back to the way it was when I first started out. Me, myself and I! But there is too much business for 1 person

Sorry and i know how you feel and thats why i work alone. Before it was the other way around though. I was the one spending time and wanting to fix things but the boss was the one saying just skip it to save time so he could make a buck. So i quit and started my own business because im in it for the love of detailing not the money.

Re: I am absolutely sick of this whole employee thing!

      A couple of thoughts...

      1. I'm not sure being the "coolest boss ever" is a good thing (always). You didn't expand upon your working relationship with your employees, but I have found that in order for employees to be at their best, they need to be treated with respect, but must also treat the boss with respect. This is usually best if you are not "friends" with your employees. It is okay to be friendly, but I wouldn't put too much stock in the "coolest boss ever". To me, that translates to ... "he lets me get away with stuff nobody else would.

      2. Simple economics -> I think pay is normally linked to quality of employee. That is not to say you can't have an AMAZING employee for little money, but I think the general idea that "you get what you pay for" is true in most cases. If this guy shows promise, sit him down for a serious talk and tell him, he either shapes up or he'll have to ship out.

I try to keep things firm, yet friendly at the same time.
As far as pay is concerned, he has the ability to make some pretty good money if he wants to. He is on a commission basis, and I have enough work for him to make 200-300 per day. But he bails out on me half way through the day.

When we get rainy weather, I offer to give him things to do around the shop so he can still make money. He tells me that he'll be there, then he never shows. Or when he does show up, he'll spend the day working on his truck I'm not paying him to work on his own truck.

He is pretty much all but gone now. I have hired a replacement for him, and he is training the new guy(not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing). I wish I could spend the time training the new guy, but I have very little time to train someone to clean cars. I have to polish paint(about 18 cars behind schedule right now), and work my full time job.

Now, he just doesn't answer my calls or text messages. So I have no idea if he's going to be there or not.

Ah, the work ethic of our young. My guess would be he has the thought process of "I would work harder if you paid me more." That puts you in the if you worked harder, I would pay you more frame of mind. What a Pandoras box we find ourselves in. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses and move forward which sounds like what you are doing. I'm sure that you have done this but remember to set crystal clear expectations for every employee however many that might be. What ever those may be, they must be applied consistantly or you run the risk of having people bail on you. We are in a immediate gratification era it seems.

Maybe we can get Joe or Renny Doyle to chime in with some suggestions?

Hope you find someone that is not only good but reliable. I just don't understand why some people need to be so flakey. Sounds like he has the potential to win some pretty good money.

Gah, I wish I knew more about detailing so I could work for you full time. I'm the kid who called you who was interested in working / learning from you but time doesn't permit me to. Where exactly is your shop? I know you go everywhere as far as the mobile detailing goes.
