  • Gotta get new tires

    Here's what's going on...

My tires have got to be replaced. I'm tired of dealing with their poor performance at 35k miles. The take forever to hook-up in light rain and ice / snow is hopeless. In wet weather, I can hit the throttle and break the tires loose while going 45mph in a straight line.

    So...

I've put in a LOT of extra hours at work to earn some extra money to replace them. My budget is $400 and not a cent more.

    Here are the requirements:
    -215/60/16 size
    -Mostly dry driving
-Occasional heavy rain - about once a week
-Must be manageable in wintry conditions - handle three inches of snow without a problem
-Name brand - I don't want to deal with a random company.
-Last 40k miles - I'm not taking the Sable to the track, but I do like to push the car (no burnouts).

Currently, the factory Continental ContiTouring tires are on there.

I have plenty of experience with choosing summer tires, but all-season tires are really different.

To me, the Bridgestone Potenza G 009s sound really good for my car.

    Thanks for your help!

I agree with browsing the reviews and surveys at tirerack.com.

Although it isnt as much fun to see that my car came with the worst tires in the category, at least I know for the same price I can get the best in a little while.

whatever you do do not get goodyear eagles, they will wear very fast.but whatever you get make sure you rotate them EVERY 6k,as long as you do that they should last as long as they can,it make such a difference, would not hurt at all to get the allignment checked.check out discounttire.com i got a hell of a deal on there.check ebay to,you can get a way better deal usually online than shops.

Definitely read the reviews at Tire Rack. Consider strongly what you really need out of the tire - some all season tires are still not all that great in the snow so if that's critical make sure you find some reviews about driving in those conditions. Consider also the vehicle you're fitting the tires to and what sort of vehicle the reviewers are driving. The same tire on small, lower powered FWD imports may yield a much different result on a higher powered RWD car.

I can't help too much with All Season tires. I am an All-Terrain person myself, but I'd think something like BF Goodrich or Bridgestone would be best.

                    Re: Gotta get new tires

There is a "Traction" rating right on the tire. Don't buy anything not rated A or AA. About 75% of tires are A rated, but I've had new cars come with B's, and they are useless on anything but dry roads, and not really satisfactory on those.

Here's one place to find rating and saftety info.
SaferCar.gov is now NHTSA.gov. You can search for vehicle ratings and do recall checks on vehicles, tires, car seats, and more.

Cooper CS4 Touring, they come in T (~$75) or V (~$95) speed rated in that size. They are a good all season tire with silica tread and nylon overwrap. Checkout Cooper's website for details.

Four Bens for four tires???? Is that new, or the price the guy wants to steal them? Last couple of sets I bought (one for daughter and one for granddaughter...yeh, they saw me commin a mile away) were Michelins which seem to work out well but a lot higher priced.

I agree, read the reviewsand stay away from the eagles. I use to own a Sonoma p/u. Came with Goodrich. They lasted around 15k. Switched to the Eagles they would last around 20k. If you can I would go with the Coopers, or Michelins. I understand about your budget, hope it works out for you.

Michelin's seem like the best rated for my car.... but $$$. Oh well, gotta get the good stuff I guess.
