From Irvine to the Bob Hope airport in Burbank. Have to be there at 9AM on a Wednesday. How much time should I budget? 5 N the whole way.....

Re: Commute time SoCal
9AM on Wednesday? You better leave now...don't even take time to shut down your computer.I hate that drive. (Actually, I have no idea...I did that drive a few times a few years ago, but have no idea how long it took me.)

Re: Commute time SoCal
While going straight up the 5 is the obvious route, I find it's usually the worst route. Traffic is beyond horrid on that fwy! I know it's a bit longer mileage wise, but I find it's often less aggravating to take either the 57 or 605 to the 210 and go West, then pick up the 134 in Pasadena and continue to the 5 in Glendale, then head the short distance north to Burbank. Traffic just seems to flow better. Should be under 1:45 to make the drive.
Or, you could drive up the night before and get a hotel room, then sleep in the next morning and arrive fresh, no stress, well rested.Michael Stoops

Thats a great idea. The 57 will be almost completely clear going north bound. The 210 will bunch up at about Irwindale-Monrovia and be bad until Pasadena. After Pasadena it should pick up.

Re: Commute time SoCal
if you start @ 6am, it should take about an hour. 7am or later should take about 1.5 - 2 hours. You will bottleneck a bit getting close to downtown, but once you pass the East LA interchange, it should flow much smoother.Trust me...Your patience will be rewarded...

Re: Commute time SoCal
I haven't had the pleasure of being stuck in southern California traffic for 16 months.
Without a doubt, the best part is not feeling my blood pressure go up while stuck in the number one lane of the 405 at 0 - 3 mph while looking at an empty Diamond Lane that I helped pay for.
The ONLY way I get around southern California when I visit is after 1:00AM and before 4:30AM.
When was the last time you guys added up the number of hours you waste commuting? I have a friend down there that commutes an average of 90 minutes each way every day.
That's 3 hours a day X 5 days a week = 15 hours per week
15 X 50 weeks per year = 750 hours per year
750 hours / 24 = 31.25 days a year commuting
One month of 24 hour days per year commuting. 1/12 of his life wasted + any shortened life span due to high blood pressure, stress, highway shootings etc.
Gotta love sunny southern California.
Do Vipers overheat if driven at 3 -10 mph for 3 hours?

Re: Commute time SoCal
I'd do what Mike said,
catch the 57 and hit the 210 in San Dimas,
then 210 West through Monrovia/Pasadena to the 134
I wouldn't dare get on the 5 though, it's a parking lot around that time. I'd probably opt to take the streets from the 134, exiting Hollywood Way and drive north until I get to the airport.-Brad

Re: Commute time SoCal
OK, we get it, you're not fond of SoCal traffic. But guess what, go to any major metropolitan area in the country and traffic stinks. Detroit, Chicago, Houston.....they're all the same. In fact, I found Detroit last year to be worse in many ways than LA, and being in outside sales for a living, I spend a lot of time on the highways and byways in and around LA. A multi disk CD changer, a good cell phone plan, and a car you like all go a long way toward making it tolerable.
I really think the key, though, is just admitting that you can't do a darn thing about it, so you'd better find a way to deal. My suggestions above are one way, your method of just leaving works too. Using a gun would be a bad example. But then again, that's not exclusive to LA either.Michael Stoops
