thats right ... now you can blow things up whilst you type
My son who is 6 wants to put up his own website and I told him he could if he'll learn to type, I'd like to find a learning program that is also fun and includes a game, but probably not this one...

I would be open to less gory suggestions!

Back in the old MS-DOS days, I had a program called "Super Mario Typing Adventure" or something like that.... it was fashioned after the original NES game. I dunno if anything like it is still arround.

I'll have to look through my old-school floppy disk boxes later

When I first got my computer many years ago I was one of those hunt and peck people. I have become very proficient at it now .

Sometimes old school typing can get you in trouble when PC's first came out (yes I am that old) the old school typing methods had you using a lowercase L for a numeral 1 and that would cause a lot of trouble trying to write programs. Also you had to shift to get numbers instead of punctuation unlike the reverse on PC's so now a phone number would look like this
                9&!$0_%%%_!@#$
I think the shifted punctuation was the hardest thing to overcome.

I took a typing class in Junior High because my parents said it would be good if I could type reports in High School and College rather than hand write them (guess they'd seen my handwriting!).

It just stuck with me I suppose, but it's funny seeing the look on the face of a guy I work with when he realizes I'm composing an email all the while looking up at him while we carry on a conversation. Talk about multi-tasking!

Besides the high school typing class, my mother was a typing instructor for a long, long time; I still remember the WWII-era typing drills. And PC keyboards *still* feel weird compared to manual typewriters.

My issues with CT went away after I started doing better grip/forearm exercises- heavier weight and fewer reps. But then I'm not typing for hours every day the way I did when I was teaching either.

Thats probably not the best game for a 6 y.o

This may be more appropriate ...

Thought I would revive an old thread...

What is the useful life of a keyboard? Do any of you guys/ gals replace your keyboard often?

I work in an IT Department and we do replace keyboards every once in a while. I'd say they have a lifespan of 4 years. Now they don't die from usage, it's from food that users spill into them.

To answer the original topic, I have been able to type without looking since taking a computer typing class in high school. Which is fortunate for me, since I'm a UNIX System Administrator and still do everything by command line! We're a software company, and I'm surprised how many programmers still hunt and peck with two index fingers!

I have finally mastered the alphabet, but I am still learning the rest of the keyboard. I bought a new keyboard back in '03, but sometimes the keys act like they need a little lube on them or something.

Then again, it might be my short dumpy fingers that are part of the problem.
