Ultimate Compound and Polish - are results temporary or permanent?

I got a new black Chevy Volt, and noticed that on one of the doors there were some haze similar to a wet sanding look. This is not the actual photo from my car but found it online and looked very similar.

I suspect it's the result of some "detailing" done by the dealer to remove some water spots. I already had some UC, UP, and UW on hand so I gave it a try by hand. It removed the haze and looks much better. I can't tell any more.

I was wondering if the result is permanent or can it resurface after time?

By hand, it's likely temporary. By machine, the haze can be corrected permanently. Either way, the polishing oils coat everything and make it look good. However, if you don't keep up the regular re-waxing, those oils will slowly weather away, and you'll see defects like that re-appear if they were only temporarily fixed. This could take a long time with lots of neglect (like washing with harsh chemicals and never re-waxing all year).

In most all cases, using a product like our Ultimate Compound by hand to remove light to moderate swirls, scratches, stains, and any other below surface defects, Ultimate Compound will provide permanent defect removal of these light to moderate defects. In your case of what we would consider a heavy to severe defect, and which looks to be a sanding mark from automotive sanding paper, it is possible that the use of UC, UP, & UW, have temporarily hidden the deepest parts of the defect.

It typically takes a rotary polisher to remove sanding marks. It is certainly possible to remove sanding marks by hand, it really depends on how aggressive you were working the Ultimate Compound. It's actually less invasive to the paint to remove the sanding mark defect with a machine equipped with the proper pad & liquid, instead of working in a compound aggressively by hand in a small area for an extended amount of time.

Overall, if the defect does re-appear, just know that it would be best to use a machine to remove or seek a professional with the proper equipment to remove permanently.

2. Do I run the risk of possibly removing too much clear by trying to have the dealer fix it?

1: An Automotive Glass Cleaner is an easy way to removing any waxes, polishing oils, or compound residue from a cured automotive paint finish.

2: In general, no, but we have know way of knowing this without knowing what the defect is and if it is a sanding mark, what grit was used, how aggressively it was sanded in this area, etc.

3: It's your call. Another option would be to have a professional detailer experienced with sanding or a body shop inspect & repair the defect.

I would go over it with UP to remove the wax .
like Nick said use an automotive glass cleaner or 15 percent isopropyl alcohol mix a couple of times to remove the oils and your paint should be bare.
That should settle your curiosity.

Call the dealer anyway and tell them whats up. Sounds like someone didn't finish their job at the dealer.

Some juicy update.

I took the car to a reputable detailer and he saw that the upper door panel was repainted - fish eye and paint thickness to name a couple. Called GM and it was on file with them. It was a transit damage that the dealer repaired. Going to the dealer tomorrow to sort this out. Do I ask for a new car? I don't think they'll do that though.
